Furniture recommendations for a small living room.

Using the picture as reference, fireplace and wall colour, a small living room that's approx 4m x 4m.

Can people recommend furniture for this room. A two seat sofa and single chair, coffee table, corner TV stand, rug. Nothing contemporary if possible, something that will look ok in 10 years, I don't care about trends, just a cohesive look.

Please don't judge, I have no taste, no style, nothing we own matches, I buy clothes that the mannequin is wearing because, in someone's opinion, they go together.

We want a room that's smart, slightly formal without being uncomfortable. We have around £3k available but will hold off and save if it gets us a nice look.

I know it's a bit much, but direct links would be super useful.

Chat GPT is good for giving you options. You will need to give approximate dimensions and numbers and positions of doors, windows, fireplace or anything else that can't be moved. You'll be able to choose what sort of style. It's a bit of fun having a look to see what it comes up with.

Do you actually only want a 2 seater sofa? I think that that's 13 ft square which is plenty big enough for a 3 seat if you want it?

If I were picking idea either go 2 seater + 3 seater or an armchair + 3 seater because you can lounge on a 3 seater a lot easier.

I probably wouldn't do them as a matching suite.

I love a wingback chesterfield, preferably in leather.

And then I'd go and sit on a load of sofas to find one that's genuinely comfy. I think what's comfy varies by person so I don't think it's going to be much good us recommending things online. I would probably go for either kind of browns, greens or blues with that wall. I think grey is a very current colour so I would avoid that. I would probably want something with at least a teeny bit of pattern if I could manage it, because I think they show the dirt much less.

I prefer things with rounded arms because again I think they're classic not current so don't date. I think this is where having a scale drawing and a mood board will help.

I would start with the rug because in my experience it's easier to match sofa/walls to rug than vice versa.

Im not sure £3k is enough but you dont have to do it all in one go. My sitting room evolved over time, eg, cheap TV stand from Argos until I found the 'right' one

Like @DisplayPurposesOnly our living rooms evolve over time. We're serial renovators, now on our eighth house, but have never started completely from scratch buying everything new, instead preferring to keep key pieces, adding art/antiques etc as we've found things we love. So I definitely wouldn't worry about doing it all in one hit - we have a few 'place holders' (eg an auction find wing chair that's poor quality) since downsizing in 2024 as we needed to sell some larger furniture items and are still waiting for the right replacements to come along!

At our last house we used our antique Persian rug purchased years ago as a starting point in the living room. It's unusual as the colours aren't typical (including olive green, turquoise, cerise), so we colour-drenched the room in F&B Olive (an archive colour), added our large cream linen sofa, with cushions, lamps etc in colours picked out from the rug. Loads of art collected over 20+ years completed the look. Additional seating was a funky striped velvet loveseat - as there were rarely more than four adults using the space (usually just two), this was ample seating.

In your space @Tootsiroll I would find a rug or curtains - or even a piece of art - you love and go from there, but I definitely wouldn't choose brown leather sofas - something more tactile with a pattern would be my choice. I love Sofas and Stuff sofas which are ££££ but they have good savings in their outlet stores.

Our colourful Persian rug is now paired with our other three seater sofa (turquoise velvet, from the kitchen at our last house) alongside our old Arts & Crafts dusky pink sofa with applique roses, in a room that will ultimately have vibrant patterned turquoise wallpaper. We're rather eclectic though, so our style isn't for everyone!
