What sitting room light do you have?

We are finally getting the broken light fitting in the sitting room fixed but I now have no idea what to go for. Just want something classic £100-200 budget, probably not going to replace ever again so something that will last and not be too dated . Thanks for any ideas x

Ps it’s the main central over head ceiling hanging light

Then buy a standard B&Q fitting and invest in a beautiful shade.

Then buy a standard B&Q fitting and invest in a beautiful shade.

A beautiful shade can definitely elevate a basic pendant light.

We tend not to use the overhead lights much, but still like to have the option. Additionally we have loads of lamps strategically placed.

In our little snug, where we sit to read, we've got three small blue Pooky 'Bloomer' pendant shades on Dunelm vintage style ceiling flex/rose fittings in rhubarb/brass. They add to the eclectic look we're going for.

For the other living room, where we watch TV, I got a large woven wicker light fitting (also Pooky). This room - whilst still fairly eclectic - has a slightly more contemporary feel and the 'onion' shaped light suits the space really well.

Our cottage ceilings are low, with the only space for a huge statement light being the stairwell, where we've gone mad with a big, coloured glass, vintage style chandelier.

Agree, Pooky is the best starting point for shades. Their summer sale has started so now is a good time to buy.

This from b and q years ago. I like that it's classic, but also modern. We generally use lots of lamps though.

I like b ans q, dunelm, habitat, marks ans Spencers for inspiration. Also fb marketplace or your local auction house for something a bit different. Lastly, I have got most of my lamps from charity shops, as others have said, a good shade works wonders.

I have a chrome and crystal classic Chandelier, I love it, rarely use it as prefer ambient lighting. But I’m old and don’t like to change things too often.

@BerylllIs it a pendant light (low hanging) or does it need to be nearer the ceiling due to limited headroom? How much light do you need from it?

It is now low hanging, but would like lots of light

I did have two beautiful gold shades that I loved but had to change to spotlights which I hate. The spots give lots of light that the pendant shades didn't but I hate the harsh light they give off.

The huge issue with pendant lights is floor to ceiling height. Are you going to have to dodge them? A fixed to the ceiling light gives more clearance. Also how much light does the central light need to emit? A glow or something more substantial? What size is the room? Tiny fittings look a bit silly in a big room. What’s the style of the room? White/grey polished look or shabby chic or mid century modern? What are you trying to achieve?

We have a 5 brass bulb on a driftwood branch strung with rope. Its beautiful and my DS made it. I wont photo it as its unique so would be outing. We dont have it on a lot but when we do it lights up the room beautifully.

NeedToKnow101 · 08/07/2026 13:29

I’ve got a large black cylinder one with holes and brass on the inside from Ikea. I think it also comes in dark blue and white. I’m very happy with it but no pic as we took it off temporarily to fit a fan in the light socket.

@OneMintBear I seriously considered that last one (Edith), but in the Plaster colourway for our landing which is painted a similar colour. Then I was offered the chance to get an absolute bargain as a family member miscalculated their ceiling height, the result being this beauty for £120 😍

This is mine. It’s in our front room and we’ve had it nearly 15 years and have decorated the room three times but never changed it as it goes with all styles and colours. It’s glass so catches the sunlight and reflects it.
