So we have a big living room / dining space in one room which is all carpet. We want hardwood under the dining table. Would it look strange to have half carpet in the lounge and half hardwood under the table?

No not at all. I could work really well and define the space, although this would depend on the proportions of the room.
I'd be tempted to do two thirds, one third. Also get a rug for under the table.
