Choosing a large rug colour to go over a beige carpet

Hi everyone, I want to get a large rug (8ft by 11ft or 9ft by 12ft) to go over the carpet in my lounge. The lounge is big and long and I only want the rug for the bottom end where the TV and sofas are. My question is what colour? We have a taupe/beige carpet (I'll try and post photo) , brown sofas and dark brown furniture... I don't know if I should go colourful or keep it tonal. Any ideas, anyone have something like this currently?

Image hopefully shows carpet and wood colour.

It really depends on what you like. You could go for an IKEA one with a geometric pattern, or a Persian-style intricate design. I would have a look at Wayfair - they have millions of photos of actual rooms, and you'd get some idea of what to go for.

Thanks for the reply @AgentPidge I think that's my problem though, there's just so much choice and given it'll be about £500+ for the size I want I don't want to make the wrong choice 🤔😔 argh.... If only I could get someone to bring me a selection to choose from 😁

It's a neutral room. What colour are your curtains? Any rug you like would be fine and then you can tone it in with cushions and curtains if needed.

Thanks @almostcountrygirl yes it's a neutral room as are the curtains, I think maybe I'm just overthinking it 🤔

Your lounge sounds quite calm at the moment but maybe a bit boring. Would you like to introduce another feeling when you enter the room? (Sorry if that sounds a bit woo!) That might affect what colours/pattern you choose. We got a large (though slightly smaller than yours) lounge rug from IKEA but chose a solid colour because there was already a lot of pattern and colour in the curtains. So do you want restful, invigorating, warm, fresh?

It is quite calm, suppose you could say boring, although have splashes of colour in artwork, lots of pretty plant pots and plants, candles etc. I guess I like the idea of the lounge being cosy and relaxing, hadn't thought about a block colour though... More food for thought @Delphiniumandlupins 😁

Have a look at Dunelm , they have some lovely rugs at very reasonable prices .

Tone on tone but different texture. I’d put on a rug in a similar colour but with a deep shaggy pile

You could take a picture of the room and ask ChatGBT for some rug ideas. I would suggest considering a faded-look kilim.

My rugs tend to be subtly multicoloured as I love colours but can't commit to just one!
I also have multicoloured dining chairs for the same reason, they are like a very fine stripe of lots of colours in the style of Paul Smith stripes. It means whatever colour I use for curtains or other things it all goes together. Dunelm do a good variety of rugs.

Frith rugs bring them to your home.

A Persian red would go well with those colours. You could even chose a Persian-type carpet!

ooh thanks everyone, some really good suggestions, I'll have a look at Frith rugs too, as that sounds ideal :)

We have a beige carpet, inherited with the house, and is a bit stained so we bought this rug to hide the area we see most when sat on the sofa. It's a really lovely rug, excellent quality which we have currently put away as have a new puppy, but hope to get it back out soon

i got an white woolly looking pile ikea arende 2m x 3m rug for £79 and they have smaller sizes too from £29 i think. so worth it to hide the old carpet!

Turquoise goes well with brown/beige. I'd get a bold turquoise one with geometric design. I got a large one from an eBay shop in grey/cream and bright claret in a geometric design.

A vintage persian rug would be a cheaper option and be hard wearing and have more muted colours than a new rug.
