Home decor inspiration needed!

Need some inspiration!

Have a split level staircase and trying to think of whats best in terms of decoration to reduce the echo the large wall produces. I was either thinking of a large picture and some corner shelves or just shelves. Would like it to look a bit quirky if all shelves but struggling to find the right inspiration online. Its a 1970's house so stairs are narrow so what ever I have cant come down too low.

Picture added to give idea of the space.

There's probably rails under that banister. For some reason they liked panelling them over in the past. If you uncovered the rails it'd feel a lot more open/less enclosed.

If it’s 70s how about a bold wallpaper? A mirror will certainly help. I feel it needs texture

Not necessarily....

We've previously discovered spindles when removing board on the staircases in a couple of Victorian houses.

However, in our current (Georgian) cottage that was last renovated in the mid 1960s, including a newly positioned staircase, the landing area was boarded whilst the spindles adjacent to the stairs were not.

We eagerly removed the boarding on the landing to discover.....a huge gaping void. No spindles at all. So, imo, yours being a 1970s house @Wonderwhyibother, it may have been built without any spindles.

I'd definitely want to lean into the mid century vibe with colourful wallpaper and accessories/art etc as well as adding texture with a bold blind!

Gargoyles

Bold wallpaper and a load of pictures in frames is what i would do. but be careful not to put them too low or they will get knocked when people use the stairs.

If your main objective is to reduce the echo then I think you need something to absorb sound.

In a similar position in our (Victorian) house, I have a large piece of textile art (about six feet by three) I bought at a local degree show.

If you wanted to lean into the 70s vibe, something like this?

Sorry, didn’t attach.

I would go for a big mirror on the wall in front. Recently got one done by our local glass shop they came and measured it so it fit perfectly, looks great! Then I’d pop some picture frames on either side and a nice plant pot (maybe elevated on one of the wooden steps you can by) in the corner

Wow!! What app did you use for this?? Looking for some inspiration for my living room :)

SecretSweetStash · 14/05/2026 10:39

@Marinacat that is brilliant, how did you do that? What app/tool?

What the fuck magic is this? Do mine now, @Marinacat lol

BridgetJonesV2 · 14/05/2026 10:47

I'd go for a bright neutral (no grey tones) and paint the walls/ceiling the same colour to add some brightness. Then use large wall art (frame or canvas) to add some splashes of colour. John Lewis have got some nice retro 70s vibe ones.

If you load a picture into chat GPT and give it a brief that’s what you get, you can use it for anything, I believe the free version allows this as well as the paid version.

literally go to chatGPT on Google open it up type in and drag in or upload your picture by pressing the plus button.

Marinacat · 14/05/2026 19:01

@wishfulthinking25 @CupcakeDreams @SecretSweetStash

It’s just the ChatGPT app. I uploaded the picture and asked it to decorate the space.
You can specify colours , wallpaper etc. Whatever you can dream up!

SecretSweetStash · 14/05/2026 20:27

@Marinacat thank you for that. Will have a play with it.
