Which counter/bar stools?

I need to buy under counter/barstools for the kitchen island. The units are a pale Dove grey with a white marble worktop. I’m looking at either velvet ones or rattan ones - do any of you have these? Are they easy for small children to get on to? Would you recommend? Any alternative suggestions?

I wouldn’t buy either. Velvet will be impossible to keep clean with small children (and some adults!!). Rattan is uncomfortable and holds crumbs and dust.

Something you can wipe clean and isn't uncomfortable to sit on.

As a bar stool veteran I concur. Got real or faux leather for wipe clean. Otherwise they get gross really quickly. I’d also go with gas lift so they’re adjustable for people of different heights.

Neither, mine have a heavy round base,( twist to enter/exit.) hydraulic up down ( good for smaller people) & pivot.(no scraping feet on the floor.) They have a mid height back. Mine are fake vintage leather. ( goes with the vintage decor)
Velvet has to be a no, surely ?

I know what you’re saying about the velvet, only one DC to clean up after though… I prefer proper legs, not keen on the heavy round bases.

Appreciate the feedback so far.

With the "arms" will they go under your counter?

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 02/04/2026 14:45

@lushposey We had the lift ones and got rid! So heavy and difficult to clean around. I’d go for velvet as I think it’s more comfortable. Rattan I had for casual dining years ago and wasn’t impressed. A bit like your picture but dark brown. If dc is a bit messy, use a towel covering!

Philippe Starck bar stools in John Lewis are gorgeous and currently on sale. Not velvet or rattan though sorry.

lushposey · 02/04/2026 15:52

I do like the Philippe Starck ones, but they’re a bit out out of my budget and not sure they’d go with what else is in the open plan layout.

Like the Philippe Starck Masters ones! We have the dining chair version in our London flat. We once had rattan chairs like the bar stools - they were ok but we sold them. I’m ok with fabric chairs but we aren’t messy people.

I have ones similar to the rattan ones in your op. I love how they look but they’re very uncomfortable!

Defiantly41 · 04/04/2026 16:38

We have these in a different colour (also come in leather or faux leather), and various colours. https://www.danetti.com/products/serena-velvet-bar-stool-blue-grey

very comfortable, don’t scrape the floor, easy to get on and off and surprisingly durable - I sprayed them with stain repellent stuff when we got them and everything has just wiped off so far 🤞🏻

Same. I have the dining chairs and have had for nearly ten years and they still look gorgeous. We have dogs and kids too. They are one of the best investments we have made furniture wise.

My MIL has the velvet ones and they are beautiful. Also we have two young children and velvet style chairs at the kitchen table and they clean very easily.
