Thoughts on very dark paint in bedrooms

My room is currently a bright yellow and I want a drastic change. I'm quite high up and the room gets amazing sunsets and I think something very dark could work well. I have testers up of Stiffley Blue and Wine Dark but I'm also looking at Downpipe (there seems to be quite a few bedrooms in that up on inspo sites) and Douter.

Does anyone have any pics, experiences or thoughts to share please?

I like dark and jewel colours and pastels are not for me, so of course I would say go for it.
The only thing about dark walls and ceilings is that it is less easy to spot spiders…

My bedroom was dark for couple off years I really liked it, we’ve painted it light now and it do look a lot bigger, is your room big because in my opinion you can get away with it

The trouble with F&B paint names...

...you can never be quite sure if it isn't an April Fools joke!

I painted our bedroom a similar shade to Stiffkey Blue years ago, you needed a torch to find your knickers in the morning, although was fantastic for getting a newborn baby to sleep. Not sure about how much difference sunsets will make tbh. I prefer our bedroom in Savage Ground and wouldn’t go dark again.

Friend of mine her boyfriend had a bright red bedroom. Not for me.

I prefer deep, saturated colours and wouldn't want a light bedroom personally. All our bedrooms will eventually be dark (colour drenched paint in some, wallpaper in another), so my thoughts are yes, they look great and go for it! We have F&B De Nimes in our bedroom and I love it.

Imo, for a room you're (presumably) going to mostly be spending night times in, dark is perfect as the space feels cosier and cocooning.

Love my dark blue one. It's Craig & Rose Flanders Blue. Dark is comforting to me.

This is my little toilet. Only room with colour. I love it. Hubby says all I need is a crystal ball and I’d be set 🤣🤣

I have an Inchyra Blue bedroom, and love it. It's big and has high ceilings, though.

I think dark works in bedrooms because the are low traffic (it looks shabby very quickly in a hallway), and it’s also the ultimate cosy, low key space. A red wine colour sounds gorgeous. Have you looked at Bringal, F&B?

Orangebadger · 01/04/2026 11:28

I love dark bedrooms… have always had until now and with a light room I keep the curtains pulled as I love a cosy bedroom! Just waiting to redecorate.

@Travsmam love your loo!!

Travsmam · 01/04/2026 11:43

Thanks…..me too. Everything else in my home is bloody beige 🤣🤣

canisquaeso · 01/04/2026 11:58

I love dark rooms but only if they don’t get a lot of sunlight throughout the day. I don’t want the sun shining on dust.

CombatBarbie · 01/04/2026 11:59

My room is deep purple/pink drenched.... I love it.

You would be better with wall paper, or possibly lining paper and painting it because these colours need many, many coats if you change your mind.

OverlyFragrant · 01/04/2026 13:22

I love my dark purple bedroom.
I only wish I went full drenching with the wood trim and furniture.
A good tip, if you want a darker ceiling, but not as dark as the walls, mix 10% white into your wall paint (buy a separate tin or bucket to mix) and this will coordinate beautifully.

I’ve always loved dark greens, like an emerald shade.

My previous bedroom was painted a dark red shade, similar to what I'd expect Dark Wine to describe, and I loved it during the colder months but it definitely did make me feel more hot and stuffy during the summer. It just made the room feel really close.

We have also recently painted our bathroom walls dark blue and it's definitely made the room noticeably darker, it just doesn't bounce the light around like the previous white did. It looks nice, but on grey days you have to turn the light on, which we never did before in daylight hours.

We have Dulux Heritage Florentine Red and we love it, it feels like a room to sleep in. We have picture rails which are white and white above the picture rails, so it keeps the red as a statement!

pinotnow · 02/04/2026 10:51

I love the dark greens reds but don't want to have to replace everything like light shades and rugs as well as a laundry basket and chair with blue and white design so it will have to be dark blue/blue-toned grey. Having said that I've ordered a tester of Graham and Brown Buddleia as maybe a bluey/purple would also work.

I don't know if I'm brave enough to do the full colour-drenching. I have two doors in there - one to the en-suite. Would it look stupid to paint the doors and skirting but leave the ceiling white?
