Where can I buy a large rug?

madameimadam · 31/03/2026 12:26

I’ve looked in the usual places (Dunelm, John Lewis, IKEA, Wayfair, Ruggable)

I want a large rug for a bedroom. Walls will be sage green so something that matches. It’s a period house so nothing too modern. Waxed floorboards so needs a rug

Tight budget - don’t really want to spend more than £500 ideally (but this might be wishful thinking)

if budget were no option, I’d love a massive William Morris one but sadly, out of my price range (& DH would be raging 😆)

Where do I need to look?

We've bought a few rugs on eBay, although these were antique ones which probably isn't what you're looking for. We paid anything up to 1k for various sizes from 1 x 2m up to 3.5 x 4.5m. In the past we also had success with That Rebel House, Weaver Green and The Rug Seller. We have an amazing one from Liberty but that was over 2k (bought with an inheritance to treat ourselves).

I'd go to a proper carpet shop and see what they have.

Regarding matching - better to go neutral as the rug will likely outlast your paint.

newornotnew · 31/03/2026 13:07

Some carpet suppliers will edge a piece of carpet, so that's an option too.

We have a couple of traditional wool rugs bought at an auction room for very little. Quite old now but have worn well.

We had excellent service from Kukoon. They’re online but have a great range and are really helpful. We’ve just had to return a rug that wasn’t right and they have sorted it out. The return was £5, which I don’t think is bad for free delivery and then collection when there’s no fault. You can also speak to them, which was helpful.

We have a patterned kelim-style (but flat-weave/printed) one from Kukoon and although I like the pattern (and I got it on sale so it was well-priced) it's a bit thin and weedy so doesn't lie flat. It's just not heavy enough, I don't think. I still like it for the price, and it's washable.

I've always been pleased with Next rugs.

Weaver green has great rugs that are good price and bomb proof as they are made from recycled plastic bottles. To clean you hang over a washing line and hose down. Smaller rugs go in the washing machine. Make sure you get the underlay as well

Marketplace, Anqtiue stores, TK Maxx.

Happy to recommend ruggable and they frequently have 20% off

Beware of putting in the washing machine, I put one of their smaller rugs in the machine and one of the corners unraveled badly. Had washed it a couple of times previously with no issues. I’d stick to the line and hose method for all their rugs to be on the safe side. Or else use a low spin speed, they drip dry quickly die to being recycled plastic.

Try Etsy.

Alicorn1707 · 01/04/2026 10:06

@madameimadam

Kukoon, has 10% off for first order

Rugs Direct, SAVE 10 offer on. They'll also refund the difference, should you find your rug cheaper elsewhere.

The Range

Can attest to quality of rugs from the first two, plus, both have brilliant customer service.

SargeMimpson · 01/04/2026 10:08

I’ve seen rugs with great reviews on TikTok shop

madameimadam · 01/04/2026 11:09

Thank you for all the suggestions everyone!! Have found a few I like at Kukkoon. Etsy is good too - lots of their rugs are from Turkey or India - anyone order one? Hoping it won’t take weeks to arrive..

This may be too late for you, but I bought two fabulous rugs from Etsy sellers, both from Morocco, at very reasonable prices. I think with your sage walls something red-based would work well. 'Tribal' rugs pretty much go with anything.
Would love to see what you end up with. I love rugs.

Rug update - found a perfect one at La Redoute and it’s on its way!!
Lovely big one (200 x 290cm) and exactly what I wanted. Should have been £500 but was half price. So very happy.

Thankyou for all your suggestions x

Great news. Can you link a pic?

imbolic · 08/04/2026 14:06

Rather late, but we have always bought rugs at Trago Mills, though I wouldn't say they are top quality 😄

minipie · 08/04/2026 14:09

Ha, was just about to say La Redoute, then saw your update!

SadSaq · 09/04/2026 23:03

I'm looking for one too. I want warm colours and pattern.
