Would you paint your ceiling in a colour other than white?

All our ceilings are white but just musing really (and not sure I can be arsed with the faffery of painting a ceiling).

If yours is a different colour, do you love it?

Contemplating painting my living room ceiling black. The walls are a beautiful deep blue.

i'm not a fan of white and haven't got any white ceilings or white paintwork in the house.

I have colour drenched the hall, stairs and landing in a slate blue, the kitchen in yellow with wooden units and dark green accents and paintwork; and the “parlour” in terracotta, with dark green accents. I also have a small inner landing which is colour drenched in dark blue with scarlet accents.
Most of my doors and skirting boards are polished wood.

I have also painted everything in the study in dark red, including all the filing cabinets and the bookshelves which cover the wall. The ceiling in this room is beamed and is a kind of beige pink, but I have been thinking about painting in gold for years… please tell me what paint you used for yours beeble347?

Previous owners painted them cream which just makes them look grubby. Working my way through the house restoring a lovely white!

White ceilings suggest you have no imagination and no knowledge of interior design principles.

I'm fine with that🤣

Can I jump on this thread and ask what you would do with a bathroom - tiled floor to ceiling with big beige tiles? It’s a bit dated but neutral.
No walls to paint so was thinking of the ceiling.

You could try F&B Skimming Stone or similar. Basically a colour that can read as a beige but with more sophistication. Or a soft white like Wimborne White, but that may be a little bit warm.

I would suggest getting the F&B colour fan if you like their colours - it’s much easier than using a colour card to get a good sense of how the colour will look in a tricky situation and saves money on tester pots.

I am getting ready to redecorate our kitchen. I have decided I CBA with cutting in, so I am planning to paint the ceiling the same colour as the walls. I think it will look good. It is a relatively large and light room and the colour I have chosen is not too dark.

Can this work with low ceilings? We have big bedrooms (6 x 5m) but low ceilings (only 2m tall) and I’m struggling with what direction to go in. Part of me thinks to colour drench and make it cosy, not ok dark maybe a mid green. It’s magnolia walls and white ceiling at the moment and the ceiling feels so low and shadowy and dirty! Thinking surely colour can’t make it feels worse!

Ours are 2.25m, so not much higher (it's a cottage) and imo it works really well as it's a more 'seamless' look.

My bathroom is partly painted blush pink with the same pink on the ceiling. It’s looks fabulous.

I've just picked a very, very pale pink to redo my dining room and reading this thread I am wondering about having the ceiling done in the same colour. The room is north facing and current ceiling is white.

This has really made me think about what to do now.

Thank you - will definitely be trying this.

Some people do some people don’t. Personally I like white ceilings and colour on the walls.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 17/04/2026 22:11

When we first had our house x-white was all the rage. So we had rose white ceilings and apple white ceilings with white or cream walls.

For a long time I had a lovely wedgewood blue on our bedroom ceiling. It was very restful looking up at it and I miss it sometimes.

But we have all-white ceilings now.

My daughter colour drenched her room when we painted it in the summer and it looks really nice. It’s a fairly pale pink and the room is bright so can handle it. The rest of the house has white ceilings. I might consider a different colour next time as I do like how my daughters room has turned out.

Puffalicious · 18/04/2026 13:28

Here is my living room ceiling. It's been this colour for 19 years- it's a discontinued Crown colour Stepping Stone. (Obvs repainted, but I need to get it colour matched!). I have repainted the walls in different colours- it started sandy/ very neutral, was Skimming Stone & is now Green Smoke.

My dining room ceiling is F&B Cooking Apple Green & the small bathroom is drenched in Dropcloth, but all others are either pure white or an off-white of sorts. It depends what works in each room. Our bedroom was done last summer in Stiffkey, & I wanted Wimborne White or Pointing, but brilliant white looks excellent.
