How to dress a large window

If you had a large window divided into 4 panes floor to almost ceiling, how would you dress it? Window is in the living room with black internal frames, walls are light grey/off white. Window opening measures approx 3.7m wide by 2.4m high. Curtains, blinds, shutters, two layers? Needs to offer privacy and blackout for the sun and keep the heat in winter.

Need to see what answers you get to this! I got ready made lined curtains from IKEA and hemmed them to fit, but I’m not over the moon about them (six individual curtains to cover the whole space, so it’s a pain closing them without leaving any gaps). I can only imagine how expensive it would be to get curtains made to measure. I quite like the idea of slatted lateral blinds — the kind you can push right back against the outer frame in daytime — but my partner says it would be like living in a corporate building.

I feel like curtains don’t work well with the modern/clean lines of massive glass walls, but I also don’t want nothing on them at all (because of the ‘black wall’ effect you get at night when it’s dark.) My only other idea is to get four pull-down blinds in a light colour, but I can’t work up any enthusiasm for it.

Hopeful bump for the late evening browsers

We got curtains from John Lewis made to cover a similar sized window, just with a straight curtain rod. They’re normal curtains, not fancy. Nothing but good things to say about JL quality and service.

A lot of your decision comes down to a) the look you are going for and b) how warm the room is. If our house was warmer, I would have gone for the H&M linen ready mades, which look great and come in a good range of sizes - would have been a fraction of the price. Our house is absolutely Baltic in the winter, though, so we needed the warmth at the elderly sliding door and went for the heavy curtains.

We've just done this. Scope to add curtains as it's a double pole.
