Can I add drawer units inside existing kitchen base cupboards?

I have a kitchen counter with cupboard storage underneath.
These are driving me mad, because i have to go on my knees to find anything. In my dreams i can put drawers in, without changing the carcass. A drawer unit slotting into the existing space.
Is there such a thing?

It might depend on whether the company still makes the same style/size. I use my under breakfast bar cupboard for baking stuff and everything is in open top boxes I can lift out, all the flours in one, sugars in another ….

@Sausagenbacon I did exactly this. I got a local joiner who makes kitchens and wardrobes, to add drawers inside the cupboards. I’ve had them fronted in oak because my kitchen is oak lined where it matters! Has changed my life! Quire deep drawers and they take our outside crockery, picnicsware, thermos flasks, bbq tongs etc and another set takes electrical mixers and blenders, oven roasters etc. It’s made a huge difference to my kitchen but you need someone to trust with measurements and building them. Not cheap but worth it.

Yes probably, it will be easiest if the company still makes the same units as said or if they are the same width as Ikea units. You just need to attach drawer runners and then slot in the drawers.

If they are not made any more a carpenter could probably make some to size.

You don’t need the same company at all. Ours isn’t trading any more but we found a small company who measures up, made them and installed them. If you have not had it done, you don’t really know.

This is easy with an IKEA kitchen. Not sure about other kitchens.

Or you can fit internal drawers inside the cupboards. Something like https://amzn.eu/d/0iWaNUil.

I've got some in the middle of a number of base cupboards with a shelf above and storage below.
Also have one with my breadmaker in, it is plugged into a socket in the cupboard and I pull it out to use it (end cupboard and door opens against the wall so doesn't get in the way).

Yes it may be. I just mean it is particularly easy with IKEA kitchens as you buy all the individual bits yourself from their store or online and can fit them yourself. No need to contact anyone else or pay a person to do the work.

But the majority of us don’t have ikea kitchens . I have a bespoke one but got the design wrong at the time. The drawers I did have were so much easier to use. Looking back, I don’t know why I had more cupboards than drawers! However my new drawers are not ikea equivalent. They are substantial and are oak and MDF. Depends on the kitchen and I’ve no doubt Blom might have interior fittings too but as I had an expensive kitchen I didn’t want wire or plastic drawers.

We bought some wire drawers from Amazon to convert the cupboard that a built in fridge freezer had been in to a larder cupboard, it works really well. We also added a shallow solid drawer at the top of an under-counter cupboard to store utensils in. Most units are a standard width so it’s easy to fit drawers.

Chemenger · 24/03/2026 09:03

I should have said our drawers are in the cupboards, we kept the doors. It you want drawers without doors that’s more complicated.

OhDear111 · 24/03/2026 09:12

@Chemenger Depends whether you think wire drawers look good and whether they hold a Kitchenaid mixer safely. I didn’t want to introduce wire as I don’t have wire elsewhere but they are pretty good for lighter things. It’s definitely easier to keep the doors but if design matters, get drawers made that match the kitchen.

I have ikea wire drawers with heavy things on. In fact one of my wire drawers has a kitchen aid AND an enormous InstantPot on the same drawer (admittedly that one has to be moved with care!).

It is fine to put heavy things on the Ikea wire drawers.
