Wallpaper - just checking I’m not going mad!

We are going to be wallpapering DD’s cloakroom. She has a loo and vanity unit, but no shower or bath so not a wet room. I’m waiting for DH to put the vanity unity in so I can wallpaper up to it, he is waiting for me to wallpaper the walls so he can put the vanity unit in over the top of the wallpaper. We are both convinced the other is wrong. He says you don’t leave spaces for furniture, I think you don’t wallpaper behind permanent fixtures and fittings. Who is right?

His way will be neater. I would at least overlap into the space which will be covered. If it’s a large vanity I would not cover that space entirely.

Mauro711 · 19/03/2026 08:36

I would do as he's suggesting. It will look much nicer.

Starlight1979 · 19/03/2026 08:38

He's right.

rwalker · 19/03/2026 08:50

his way would be better

dairydebris · 19/03/2026 08:51

His way is correct

HortiGal · 19/03/2026 08:51

His way is correct, you don’t wallpaper around things , it’s much cleaner

Easterbunnyishotandcross · 19/03/2026 08:51

Always better to wallpaper an empty room fully ime.

2026Y · 19/03/2026 08:53

His way would be easier. Why do you want to wallpaper round stuff? What is the benefit of that?

Aphroditesangel · 19/03/2026 08:53

Much easier to do it his way and it will look tidier.

Mischance · 19/03/2026 08:56

He's right.

But it sounds as right faff to wallpaper such a tiny room - a tin of magnolia would do the trick!

DeanStockwell · 19/03/2026 08:59

I agree with pp , your dh is right it will have a neatness finish and be easier .
But with cavite that you don't need to paper all the way to the floor , just 4 or 5 inches in from the top and sides unless the vanity unit is open backed.

wyntersky · 19/03/2026 09:00

Dh is right. Font wallpaper around something.

Nutmuncher · 19/03/2026 09:03

He is right. Your way would look amateurish and messy, sorry.

SirChenjins · 19/03/2026 09:05

He's right - sorry!

SarahAndQuack · 19/03/2026 09:29

He's right - if you do a cut-out around the unit all the cut edges will eventually let the damp in under and start peeling off the wall; you won't get a neat finish.

Offcom · 19/03/2026 10:19

I agree with everyone else, but if I say you're right, will you show us the wallpaper?

Easterbunnyishotandcross · 19/03/2026 13:24

So sorry op that you may have to admit dh is right...

Womaninhouse17 · 19/03/2026 14:47

Much easier for both of you if you wallpaper first, and the finished result will look better.

Wildgoat · 19/03/2026 14:49

Absolutely his way, you don’t leave spaces as he said.

backinthebox · 19/03/2026 23:49

Unanimous then! I grew up with the horror of wood chip wallpaper everywhere - walls, ceilings, behind the bath…. I am only just recovering from the horror of trying to take wood chip wallpaper from behind the toilet in my house I bought in 1995, it’s taken me that long to bring myself to want to wallpaper something again! DH still isn’t convinced about wallpaper at all. You can’t get wallpaper off if you have screwed a permanent fitting to the wall over it. But I’ve gone with vote here and it’s now on - forever! Or until I rip out the loo and basin.

Wallpaper is here, for the nosy (and @Offcom ) DD chose it. It looks great in the room.
