Help me with the perfect warm neutral - North facing room

I hate choosing neutral colours!!!

We have a room at the front of the house which will be used for a home office/grown up snug type living room (strict toy free zone and no TV in there).

It's just been replastered so is a complete blank canvas. North facing, one big window across the front of the room. Floor will be a warm but muted sort of oak colour in LVT most probably. I envision a big cosy velvety corner sofa in the back corner in either a olive green or earthy rust type colour or similar. Warm wood furniture too (desk, bookcase etc), we really like mango wood. Lighting is warm dimmable spotlights and we will have a couple of lamps and plants and a big rug.

Help me choose the perfect neutral beige! I want it to be earthy, absolutely no greyness to it, not too dark but equally not so light that it looks like a bland magnolia type of paint. Not too yellow either.

It has to be an affordable paint so Dulux price range really, not F&B or Lick or whatever. I fell in love with 'Duvet Day' by Coat paints but was aghast at the price and I've not heard good things generally about colour matching so would rather choose an actual colour.

Tried Egyptian Cotton as a sample with high hopes as so many people rave about it but it looked really grey in the room.

Please recommend me the perfect shade of beige!!!

Honestly, OP, id probably embrace the north-facing aspect and go dark, or at least intense. Neutrals can easily look so washed out and dreary in north light. If you want Dulux, Cherry Truffle, or Midnight Teal? Waxed Khaki?

Valspar sooty lashes… so dark, but changes colours in different lights. I have it in my North facing sitting room and the adjacent snug.
looks fabulous.

I'm all for dark/intense colours, our North facing bedroom is a dark sagey green for example. But I just have this very clear picture in my mind of how I want this room to look and I rarely get that (am usually the most indecisive person ever!).

B&Q Cancun, can’t go wrong

F&B French Grey gave my living room the warmth it needed.

Oh I love the look of this, had never heard of it but could be a winner!

@LateMumma yes I mentioned Coat in my OP, I really like Duvet Day but unfortunately the paints are just so pricey.

Calico really didnt work in our north facing bedroom but found Natural Hessian (Dulux) was perfect. Earthy and not too dark against our white wood and still looks warm. Good luck!

Funny you should say that as I think we are going to bite the bullet and go with Natural Hessian! I think I'd somehow confused myself and thought natural calico and natural Hessian were the same thing but natural Hessian is definitely the earthier tone we are after as opposed to a pastelly tone.

I liked Cancun as well but DH wasn't as keen.

Will update once the paint is on as to if we made the right choice!

Pocket stone by Dulux Trade!

Do the Valspar colour match! You can get a refund if you don’t like the colour.

Ive just bought a Coat paint colour match in Valspar and it was hideous in my kitchen. 15 litres worth of pain I can’t use 😱

Valspar has a “love your colour” guarantee. If you dislike the colour, you can get a different colour of the same paint - Valspar and they will refund you up to 10 litres worth. And you also keep the paint you don’t like! B&Q thought I was mad thinking they would refund me because you can’t do it in store so they don’t know about it.

Went with a colour match of F&B Elephants Breath. Kitchen looks great and got confirmation of £104 refund today 😁

Lick paint in taupe 2 is a beautiful colour.

Stickytreacle · 12/02/2026 17:22

Dulux Gentle Fawn might fit the bill.

If you don't want F&B a colour mix / dupe of F&B Dovetale might work. It is described by them as a warm grey , but I've got it on my little stairway which doesn't get much light apart from at the top which has a skylight & I promise you it doesn't look at all grey. It's a sort of soft very pale brown and is actually quite a warm colour. I didn't want grey , & I don't think it is (Well not in the light I have . )

From below on some kitchen cabinets not walls I think shows it's earthiness - but there go go , these photos fwiw.
