Slightly cramped superking or stick with king?

AllJoyAndNoFun · 07/02/2026 13:17

I need to make a decision about a new spare room bed- the room is 320cm wide so technically I could get a superking in there plus small bedside cabinets, or use wall mounted shelf-style ones. But it will look a little cramped IMO, although plenty of room around foot of bed (120cm between foot and fitted wardrobes). Or I could just get a king which would likely be a better fit/ look more in proportion. So it's a trade off between aesthetics and guest comfort as imagine most of my friends would prefer SK from a sleep perspective.

WWYD oh wise mumsnetters??

I cant put the bed the other way because of the radiator, window and sloping ceilings.

SK - who cares if it looks a bit cramped - how often will you look at it? Those who will see it will appreciate their overnight comfort more, I suspect.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 07/02/2026 13:19

What size bedding do you currently have?
I would avoid having different sizes in different rooms.

Gagagagadoesthegoose · 07/02/2026 13:19

We went for bigger. We just sleep and change in bedrooms so the bed was more important than space around it. Edit to add that goes for our families too and they are used to super king (they are not from uk)

EmeraldDreams73 · 07/02/2026 13:20

I'd get a king personally, it's plenty big enough for most people and if you get a SK you run the risk of people being so comfy they overstay their welcome 😜

Seriously though, it's your house, you might appreciate a more spacious feel to the room, plus for SK everything's more expensive...

pixiedust79 · 07/02/2026 13:20

Do all your guests have super king sized beds at home? I think king sized is perfectly sufficient and can’t imagine that being an issue for anyone. Hotels don’t all have super king sized beds either.

olivo · 07/02/2026 13:20

Super king. We changed, never looked back. Just needed 2 sets of new bedding

NewYearNewMee · 07/02/2026 13:22

Well a super king is only 30cm wider than a king isn’t it? I’d go for a super king (and we have one!) for pure comfort levels in my personal bedroom. Our guest room just has a regular king in, the guests don’t stay long and even DH and I (both giants) would be able to sleep in it for a few nights.

itsthetea · 07/02/2026 13:24

King sized is fine and bigger than our normal bed - I don’t like super kings as I get lost

Growlybear83 · 07/02/2026 13:26

If it’s a spare room, why not have a double bed and extra space? I’m sure guests won’t expect a king size bed - most people I know manage perfectly well with ordinary doubles all the time.

7238SM · 07/02/2026 13:37

I've been debating the exact same thing with our master bedroom. I put towels on the floor to visualise the size of the bed. We are renovating and annoyingly, had the bedroom door moved so its now in the corner. I can't recall why the carpenter recommended it, but now a SK wouldn't leave much space on 1 side.

1 thing to consider is access to physically get a SK mattress to the bedroom. How wide at the stairs? You could get those zip and click ones which are essentially 2 singles which zip together. Personally though, for a spare room, a king is sufficient.

IceIceSlippyIce · 07/02/2026 13:49

King.
Visitors have suitcases and stuff thst doesnt go away. A bit of floor space is vital.

Flux1 · 07/02/2026 13:51

For my own bed I would want Superking. For a not often used guest room, King would be absolutely fine. I have a double in our guest room and no-one has ever complained (and they all come back!).

carbonelthecat · 07/02/2026 13:54

Can you meet somewhere in the middle and get a euro king? We had the same issue - super king would have been a tiny bit cramped with the way our door opens and the wardrobes, but wanted more than a king.

We use a king sized duvet on it so no issues there and haven't had any problems getting euro king extra deep fit mattress protectors and fitted sheet either.

7238SM · 07/02/2026 15:14

@carbonelthecat Euroking you say! This is the solution I'd been looking for but never knew existed- THANK YOU Flowers
Can I ask where you bought you bed and mattress from?

carbonelthecat · 07/02/2026 15:37

@7238SM we wanted a gas lift ottoman storage bed and got ours in the end from Love Your Home after going to pretty much every bed shop in the London area - but I've just looked online and they don't seem to do Eurokings anymore - which is really annoying as we only ordered ours 18 months ago!

We looked at Button & Sprung as well which we liked next best. I honestly can't remember now where else we looked had the euro kings as they all blur into one a bit after that!

Where do you get the euro king sheets from? We have one from ikea before they stopped selling them and I’m tired of all my bottom sheets being too big or too small!

30cm is a foot wider.
I would go for the Superking. We have a Superking zip and link.
The only thing is when next buying a new mattress I will insist on it being able to be flipped over not just rotated. We love a firm mattress and our latest one can’t be flipped, just rotated so the pressure on the mattress is constant. Our previous mattresses were better because they could be flipped and rotated. You also got years more use out of them.
It suits the manufacturers - total no brainer - less costly to make and the consumers have to buy a mattress more often. 🥲

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 07/02/2026 16:31

The room itself sounds small enough...its 3.2m wide

a super king is 1.8m plus frame we will call it 1.9m

that leaves 1.3m or 65cm either side
Thats very squashed to me.

I think a king is perfectly fine for a guest room.

Lennonjingles · 07/02/2026 16:34

I would get a king sized bed, we sleep on a super king sized bed, but on holiday are happy with king size.

DappledThings · 07/02/2026 16:34

I'd just get a normal double. I never knew till I was on Mumsnet that people consider a normal double abnormally small. Splashing out on a superking and all the bedding for a spare bed is mad.

Weekmindedfool · 07/02/2026 16:37

It’s a spare room fgs so occasional use. King is absolutely fine.
For the master get a super king if you like- that’s what we have, but why waste the money on the sore room?

TheChicDreamer · 07/02/2026 16:39

For my own bed I’d go for SK, but for a spare room a king size is fine.

I got ours here and I've been really pleased with them - I think we got the easy care percale ones and they were extra deep as standard and I must have got them in a sale as I didn't pay anywhere near what they are charging at the moment!

John Lewis do them as well, but not in the extra-deep from memory. I think Rise & Fall might as well?

They are ridiculously small. That would be a large single where I live. My kids both had single beds that were 140cm wide when they were teens, a double is only 135cm.

ASometimeThing · 07/02/2026 16:45

It’s only a guest room. I think a king size is fine, unless your regular guests are giants.
