Slightly cramped superking or stick with king?

AllJoyAndNoFun · 07/02/2026 13:17

I need to make a decision about a new spare room bed- the room is 320cm wide so technically I could get a superking in there plus small bedside cabinets, or use wall mounted shelf-style ones. But it will look a little cramped IMO, although plenty of room around foot of bed (120cm between foot and fitted wardrobes). Or I could just get a king which would likely be a better fit/ look more in proportion. So it's a trade off between aesthetics and guest comfort as imagine most of my friends would prefer SK from a sleep perspective.

WWYD oh wise mumsnetters??

I cant put the bed the other way because of the radiator, window and sloping ceilings.

Superking all the way for my own room but I think a king is fine for spare, I would be delighted with that as a visitor vs a standard double!

AllJoyAndNoFun · 07/02/2026 16:56

Thanks all - lots to consider. Some of my friends are on the larger side (think Joe Marler) so a SK would likely benefit them (or at least their wives!) and I imagine they have one at home but hopefully a KS with a decent mattress would also be fine for the odd night or two and kind of pleased to see a hung jury so I don't think myself ridiculous for even pondering it !

In a spare bedroom king sized would be nice but double would be fine (the one in my mum and dads spare room is small double ie 4 foot which is a bit small).

As a guest I’d prefer a bit more space in the room so for you I’d go for king.

They are ridiculously small. That would be a large single where I live. My kids both had single beds that were 140cm wide when they were teens, a double is only 135cm.

I've never measured my bed, or any of the beds I've owned but it's a standard double and always been a normal size for us. Never considered buying a bigger one or expected a bigger one staying anywhere.

As I said, never knew till MN that people consider a standard sized bed to be weirdly small.

Changename12 · 07/02/2026 17:45

OP, how old are you and what stage are you at in your life? We got 2 single beds. If we have a couple stay then they are pushed together or when our young grandkids stay, then they are separated.

lhsf844 · 07/02/2026 17:48

If it was your bedroom I’d say SK for sure, but as it’s just a guest bed I’d be mean and do King so the room looks nicer!

Very middle aged, married with two mid-teen DC but GC a v long way ahead so I'll deal with that if/when they happen. We have friends scattered around the country and so when we catch up it tends to involve staying over at one another's houses for a night or two. Most are couples with own teens so the couple stay in the spare room and their DC stay in my DC's rooms on trundles/ air beds.

Then we'll have the occasional single friend stay overnight or friends of the DC who fancy their own space (DS's BFF hates sleeping in same room as anyone else).

For a spare room, king.

Otherwise, I’ve just switched back to king from superking so I can change the bedding more easily, and I regret it.

As I said, never knew till MN that people consider a standard sized bed to be weirdly small.

A double was standard 50yrs+ when people tended to be shorter. PIL's spare room only had a double and I hate it- they have a SK themselves! DH is 6ft3 and the bed is very high off the ground, so I constantly feel I'm going to fall off. I only pick hotels with at least a king sized bed.

If a double suits couples, then fine, but if the OP has the space for king, I'd go for that then there is space for overnight bags etc. We have a friend who stays often who is 6ft 7. No way would I offer up a double to him- and that's on his own 😆

If it’s a spare room, why not have a double bed and extra space? I’m sure guests won’t expect a king size bed - most people I know manage perfectly well with ordinary doubles all the time.

I got ours here and I've been really pleased with them - I think we got the easy care percale ones and they were extra deep as standard and I must have got them in a sale as I didn't pay anywhere near what they are charging at the moment!

John Lewis do them as well, but not in the extra-deep from memory. I think Rise & Fall might as well?

Fab thank you! I thought I would be destined for baggy fitted sheets forever!!!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 08/02/2026 01:12

What size bedding do you currently have?
I would avoid having different sizes in different rooms.

HaroldMeaker · 08/02/2026 01:16

For your own bed super king definitely. For spare king size surely fine.

soupyspoon · 08/02/2026 01:23

Just think about practicalities like hoovering properly around it, needing to pull it about to get under or behind it, have you got the room to do that, changing the bedding, are you going to be shuffling up against the wall to do it, moving the mattress upstairs although you could have two linked mattresses to make that easier.

AllJoyAndNoFun · 08/02/2026 08:07

Thanks again everyone. I think im going to stick with king. I’d still have 70cm each side with SK but I think king will just look better and not feel shoehorned in.

Also really good point re getting it into the room in the first place as that room does have a weird “dog leg” going on ( old house)

King is fine, i really don’t understand why anyone needs anything bigger. A double is fine is a guest room in fact but king is is perfect. We sleep in a super king on holiday from time to time and they are too big, much prefer my king at home

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/02/2026 08:11

King is fine. I have that and any woman will say those extra 6 inch from double to king is a bonus 😂

TricNorthCarolina · 08/02/2026 08:17

@notnormanwe got our sheets from amazon - about £20. They fit great. It really annoyed me that IKEA sold me a bed & then promptly stopped making sheets that fit!

I'd just get a normal double. I never knew till I was on Mumsnet that people consider a normal double abnormally small. Splashing out on a superking and all the bedding for a spare bed is mad.

Agreed, I remember a time when I was quite happy to share a single!

Tbf lots of considering them small grew uo outside of uk where the 140 would be classed as 1.5 rather than full on double.
I is not by any math "double". Single is 90cm standardly so 140cm cannot be double.
False advertisement 😁

I would avoid having different sizes in different rooms.

This, plus a few other things - it’ll be harder to make up if there’s limited space around it; visitors will have less room for their belongings with a SK; the environmental impact of a new bed, mattress & bedding; the room will look smaller when you come to sell if it has a SK (planning maybe decades in advance I realise!). Pick whichever is most meaningful to you

I’d be surprised that the extra length is the main consideration for the majority of people.

I agree that a double is too small, for me at least, but it’s the width that’s the issue.

Hubertus · 08/02/2026 11:36

If house guests are staying for two nights or more, they need to be able to amuse themselves and have somewhere to retreat to- to read a book, have a snooze, make phone calls or just give their hosts a break. Guest comfort isn't only about bed and sleep- it's also about being comfortable during the day.

A slightly smaller bed that allows your guests to have some personal space, put clothes away, somewhere to sit etc is better imo than a small room overwhelmed by a huge bed.

Pinkissmart · 08/02/2026 12:11

I’d prioritise floor space for cases, a chair, etc

justasking111 · 08/02/2026 12:25

I'd want the super king for myself. Good point re floor space for luggage. Unless you have fitted wardrobes and drawers.
