Just wondered if you would allow anyone see your garage / shed / spare room or is it an absolute tip ?
I am so embarrassed about mine and wouldn't let anyone in.

🤣🤣🤣 nope!

MakeYourOwnSunshine · 21/01/2026 22:43

The garage is tidy in the sense that all the crap is piled to one side. There's no other direct access between the front and back garden so I need to keep a pathway clear in the garage!

The shed is very untidy.

The spare room is a tip. I keep the door closed but my mum comes over, opens it, and tuts.

Garage is pretty immaculate tbh ... husband's domain. His office is however considerably less so!

Allsigns · 21/01/2026 22:49

We have been the proud owners of a garage for 4 whole months. It's pendulumed between having all the moving boxes in it waiting to go to the tip, then tidy ish, then all the Christmas delivery boxes and new furniture packaging, then tidy ish, now it has the old furniture I need to list online to sell 🤣 so, it has at times been vaguely tidy. But it's very short-lived. I'd like to say it's because we're still settling in but I can totally see how they become a permanent dumping ground! Out of sight, out of mind! Also now it has gym equipment in there as well as a DIY project in progress. It's always going to be chaos I think.

No, it’s an absolute shit show.

GentleSheep · 21/01/2026 23:10

Both garage and shed are tidy, but both have damp problems so need fixing!

The garage is really my OH's domain but I go in & out if there is something I need.
Compared to our previous garage (well, his workshop really) this one is really well laid out with metal cupboards, shelving, worktops and insulated, non-slip flooring (he spent an absolute bomb kitting it out when we moved). All his tools are neatly put away and we use the roof space for (boxed) storage. He has a Land Rover and motorcycle down one side while on the other, we have racking full of Costco (bulk) purchases and the chest freezer.

Shed isn't too bad although it is rammed full with the "mechanical" & bulky garden tools (lawn mower, shredder, chainsaws, hedge trimmers, roller etc).
We have a smaller (potting) shed for garden tools, pots etc and a further storage box for the garden cushions.

Our storeroom (smallest bedroom) is decked out with shelving, huge stacking storage boxes, cupboards and a filing cabinet but it STILL looks like a tip with "stuff" being put in there just to keep it out of the way.
I wouldn't mind so much but that is where we keep the upstairs Dyson and other bits & pieces so I go in there most days.☹️
No-one sees in there except us, when we have guests staying it is out of bounds.😆

My art room is a bit of a mess (too many projects on the go) so I don't really encourage people to go in.
OH's study also tends to be a bit untidy with his "filing system" looking a bit random to my eyes. Every now and again he has a sort through and after some filing & shredding, order is (briefly) restored.
He says that his desk at work was quite tidy but I don't believe it!🤔

pambeesleyhalpert · 22/01/2026 01:41

No it’s awful!

Samewrinklesnewname · 22/01/2026 06:25

All 3 are tidy. We moved to the house about 5 years ago and I made a point of having them tidy from the start and its stuck.

i may be a little hugely anal about things being organised

ApolloandDaphne · 22/01/2026 06:41

We have a double garage which also has a floored attic. Both have a lot in them but it's all very tidy and organised. Lots of labelled boxes. This is all my DHs handiwork. He likes to know where everything is. He is tidy in the house too.

Icequeen01 · 22/01/2026 06:49

Our double garage is usually tidy in the summer but in the winter it looks like a garden centre warehouse. DH moves all our patio furniture in there, plus some of my mum’s as she doesn’t have storage herself. The big gas bbq goes in there too. We also store our winter logs in there and all this on top of the usual lawnmower, bikes, gardening tools etc. I went in there a couple of days ago as I needed one of our cat boxes to take my cats to the vet. It was like an assault course and I nearly broke my neck! Roll on summer when half if it can come out! It makes me laugh calling it a garage, it’s never seen a car in it since we bought the house 30 years ago!

@Nourishinghandcream Yours sounds like how we would love ours to be! My dh has a landy too, he would love to have such a well-kitted out garage 😎. And I would kill for a whole room for my art 😆 (not jealous at all promise!)

TimeTime · 22/01/2026 09:22

I did a garage sort out last year and am
now happy for anyone to see it when previously I couldn’t let anyone out there in case they got killed or maimed! We have an overflow fridge & freezer out there as well as the washing machine and tumble dryer and so, occasionally, if a friend was over and I was doing something they’d offer to go out there & get say, a new carton of milk, and I’d have to stop them.
We already had shelves but I got a load of small plastic crates and then sorted everything into those crates along vague themes and then labelled the crates! Labelling was key as then I feel obliged to put things back in the right crate so, even though we’re now 7 or 8 months into the new system, it still works!
I also cleared out a lot of stuff we don’t use or used very occasionally. We’re lucky in that we live in a very community minded street so I know that, if I did need a particular item in the future for an afternoon or something, I could just borrow it off someone.
Then I got a load of serious hooks, got a handyman over for a few hours and hung loads of things off the walls. This has freed up lots of floor space so the stuff which continues to be on the floor is now at the sides so there is clear space in the middle!

I'm just jealous of the landy(s) on this thread...we've had four previously (not all at once!), but are currently without. Hoping to get one again when the house renovations are finished...

Which brings me onto the garage. Ours is integral to our (Georgian) cottage and was originally a room before some idiots converted it in the 1960s. Our plan is to reincorporate it into the cottage where it will be a book room/hall hybrid, hopefully this year, at which point we'll add lots of attractive built-in storage which is lacking indoors right now.

We bought the property 16 months ago and because it's a major project and there's currently no shed, the garage is full of building/decorating materials, garden tools, random bits of furniture (some to keep/some listed for sale), car boot sale stuff and the odd box of stuff we've not got round to unpacking. We need to get a shed and sell some stuff in the Spring!
