DH and I need a new King Sized mattress.

Our current mattress has lasted us 10 years and cost around £1000.

Our spare room has my old Ikea bed and mattress, both cost around £600. I used them every day for 8 years and it is still a very good bed & mattress (I occasionally sleep in it now when DH has a very early start).
However, I am only 5ft tall.

So we need a new mattress, technology has moved on.
Would you recommend springs? Memory foam? A combination? Something else?

Please can you recommend good mattress shops and a good King Sized mattress?
Thank you 😊

I was about to spend £2,600 on a mattress from Dreams. My husband has trouble sleeping in the summer as he gets so hot so I was going to get one of the high tech cooling mattresses.

Then I did some research and found out the cooling tech is a gimmick (yes, it cools you for a short while but soon wears off) and was advised to look at wool.

A wool mattress is naturally cooling. And warming! It wicks away moisture when you sweat cooling you down and in winter it insulates (think sheep up a mountainside!). Foam is the worst for making you hot and sweaty. Springs/coils however are better as they allow good airflow.

I am going to order my mattress this weekend. I’ve gone for a luxury organic wool/cotton one but it’s still only costing £1,000 so a £1,600 saving on the Dreams one! (With the saving I’m treating myself to a wool duvet, mattress protector and pillow bundle from a shop called The Wool Room.

Gets recommended a lot on here and I was very happy with them - John Ryan. Very helpful if you call, and have a sleep on it guarantee thing.

Oh, just a thought. At the beginning of my mattress journey I came on here and saw this one recommended. I bought it for my daughter (off to uni soon anyway so no point spending £££) but it was highly recommended and we very nearly bought ourselves one.

Harrison Spinks, if budget allows

(It is recommended that you rotate it weekly for first few months, which have been doing - no issues)

They don’t have free returns after l trial . I asked them that specifically.

Maidenjourney · 17/01/2026 10:11

Have you got one yourself?

findusamattress · 18/01/2026 04:58

@caravantulips thank you.
That’s exactly the kind of advice we need.
Do you mind sharing where you are buying your mattress from?
My apologies, I have just seen your link. Thank you.

An IKEA mattress won’t fit on our bed unless they have changed their sizing? And our bed was very expensive, one of those once in a lifetime investments!
That said; we will be buying IKEA beds for the spare bedrooms.

@1990s John Ryan? Thank you, I’m taking notes.

Thank you @Olive567 I’ll take a look. That could suit us too.

@OnlyMabelInTheBuilding I’ll take a look thank you. The budget is: can we please both get a good nights sleep fgs?
We already rotate this mattress so that’s not a problem, thank you.

For information about us:

I’m 5ft tall and around 9.5 stone.
DH is 6ft 4 a rugby player (in the oldies team now!) he is around 15 stone in an athletic way.

I could practically sleep in a sleeping bag on the floorboards! I like an extremely firm bed.
DH likes a sensibly firm bed, but nothing like as firm as me!
I’m happy to compromise, obviously.

DH is always hot, we sleep with the bedroom door open air comes through the hallway.
He sleeps naked.
I can feel a draft standing next to an Aga on full blast.
I am currently in bed, if there was a fire now I could leave the house as I am and look fully dressed! I’m wearing a sleep bra, a vest, a t-shirt, a fleece top and fleece trousers and woolly socks.

So yes. A few differences in bed choices there 😆. We have always made it work.

Hypnos pillowtop absolutely fantastic. We've bought 3. firm but also so comfortable. Ours came from doorway to value which is in Chorley, Lancashire.
Long lead time as they are made to order but we'll worth it.

@caravantulips Have you got this mattress now? If so how is it? Dh and I are looking for a new mattress and want a natural fibres one, so basically means a wool one from what I can gather. I get very hot and itchy at night so don’t want any synthetic materials.

I’m thinking about this one too.

IKEA do standard sized mattresses now (single, double, and king) - they used not to do them and it was a real pain!

Yes, they do

All of our mattresses, with the exception of bespoke sizes, are covered under the 60 day love it or return it guarantee. We do ask that you use a mattress protector and give the mattress a good month or so, as it can take 4 to 6 weeks for your body to adjust to the new mattress. If, after this time, you are not getting along with the mattress, you can either send it back and we will refund you the cost of your mattress, or we can do a one time exchange to another mattress, depending on how you found the first one. You would then get a 60 day love it or return it guarantee with the second mattress, which you can return for a full refund if you do not find it comfortable. This applies to our clearance mattresses as well as the ones that are handmade to order.

@findusamattress Another rec for John Ryan. We have them on all our beds, including the DCs and guest room and everyone who stays raves about how comfortable it is. We have a dual sprung Legacy 2, my side is medium tension, DH's firm, and we both absolutely love it. I've also found them really helpful when choosing, as they ask about weight, preferences and sleep style.
