How to arrange this room?

How would you arrange this room?

It’s a big room so there is a lot of floor space (I think it needs a big rug). The lone chair looks weird but I can’t think of an alternative apart from just getting rid of it.

How to arrange this room?

Is the sketch to scale?

I’d put the two seater where the chair is and the four seater where the two is, with a rug and coffee table in the middle and the chair at an angle where the big sofa is now, perhaps with a small occasional table or footstool. All depending on measurements.

The sofas opposite each other either side of the fireplace.

CutePixieGirl · 22/12/2025 14:40

You have a great opportunity for a cosy reading nook in this room.

Move the sofa so it's opposite the other one. Place the chair where the books are at the end of the room (behind the door) and make that area into a cosy reading area with a lamp, small table, blankets etc.

HollyhockDays · 22/12/2025 14:48

Not to scale. We had the two seater and chair in the opposite places for years but it’s not good for watching tv that way. The space behind the big sofa isn’t as big as it looks - you can only just walk behind it at the minute.

It's hard then to advise given the proportions are out, but it sounds like it's a problem with the TV placement then rather than the furniture. I'd either have the TV wall mounted over the fireplace and the furniture as everyone's suggested, or put the TV at the opposite end of the room on the wall or on a low bookcase, table or unit.

You might have to get another socket put in, but you can buy plug in freestanding aerials if you need to and they work perfectly well.

HollyhockDays · 26/12/2025 16:37

I definitely don’t want the TV over the fireplace. It could go the other way but I’m not sure.
I might try the long sofa under the windows.

Have added some photos to give you a better idea of the room.

I think it's a lovely room! I'd try swapping the sofa that's on the window wall and the chair. Then if you're sitting on the sofa you're facing the light, which is nice.
And yes it needs a rug - are you looking for one? What kind of dimensions is the potential rug space? What kind of rug: trad, modern, plain or patterned, bright or muted?

Irememberwhenitwasallfieldsroundhere · 09/01/2026 13:44

I don't think I would rearrange it. What is it you don't like about it?

I hated our living room for ages and actually it's because it's quite a dark room so I kept trying to brighten it up with light colours and sofas etc but in the end we decided to lean in to the darkness and went with a really dark blue wall, velvet dark sofas, lights, lampshades, throws and cushions. It made a huge difference and I love it now

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 09/01/2026 13:45

And at least one more pic on what's currently the chair wall.

Irememberwhenitwasallfieldsroundhere · 09/01/2026 13:46

I know what you mean about the lone chair but there's a radiator next to it so you don't want to cover that, which limits what you can put against that wall. I think the TV is in the right place.

HollyhockDays · 09/01/2026 13:49

Thanks. I just think the chair always looks a bit out of place! I’m going to redo the curtains / paint so musing other options. Once I decide on that will think about a rug and rethink the paintings too. I don’t really like that one but DH does!

All your furniture looks like it's trying to get as far away from each other as possible. Can any of it be moved forward? If you put the TV on a unit where the chair is you could move everything a bit more in. It would make the smaller sofa look better as it could be moved left and away from the curtains. I would consider changing the way the door opens so you could bring the larger sofa forward. It will improve the look of the furniture behind that sofa too. I do think a rug or coffee table would help break up the floor space too.

efeslight · 10/01/2026 07:38

Lovely room
I think a more dramatic light fitting would look good
Leave the TV where it is

Userxyd · 10/01/2026 07:48

Agree it would look better if the big sofa and chair were pulled in quite a bit away from the walls - it looks like you e just cleared the area for a kids show or something. It’ll feel cosier and more sociable too. Otherwise it’s lovely

parietal · 10/01/2026 08:47

Move big sofa forward by 2m. Get a big rug. Swap small chair with small sofa but again bring things forward so there is more of a cosy conversation space in the middle.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 10/01/2026 09:00

Yes to more dramatic central light and a second picture on the chair wall.

How about replacing the chair with a chaise longue or a 'cuddle' sofa as more substantial? (Budget permitting.)

HollyhockDays · 10/01/2026 10:05

Yes it does all need moved in a bit. A chaise or something is a good idea.

I agree with moving the sofas forward and I'd also swap the smaller sofa with the chair.

More art and a fabulous light fitting, perhaps a floor lamp too? We don't often use our overhead lights, preferring lamps, but when our snug (a smaller room than yours @HollyhockDays ) is finished we'll have three (!) overhead lights - one is tiny and illuminates a dark corner - plus four table lamps and a floor lamp in the space.

Your space would definitely be improved by the addition of a large area rug with the front feet (or possibly all the feet, depending on how far in you bring them) of the sofas sitting upon it. For example, our living room rug is possibly too large - 13 x 10 in a 15 x 13 room - it's an antique Persian bought for a previous house which we couldn't bear to part with - but it really anchors the space.

HollyhockDays · 10/01/2026 12:08

The smaller sofa is “my” one for watching tv on. We did used to have it the other way round. Could look at it again. I also like the idea of a big padded footstool.
