Like Emma Bridgewater but not so chunky

Most of our current mugs are almost 15 years old and, those that are left, are bearing various scars. There also aren’t that many left so I am thinking of getting some new ones before Christmas as I can’t see visiting relatives being delighted to find out that there is a rota in place for having a hot drink! The problem is, what to replace them with!
I love the look of Emma Bridgewater mugs and could easily buy 20 or so her designs tomorrow but there’s the fundamental that I find them too chunky to drink tea or black coffee from. We have had two of the half pint mugs for well over a decade but they are some of the least used. Languishing along side them are the Le Creuset ones which suffer from a similar issue.
What other options are there? I like the shape of the Wrendale ones but not the pattern. The Eleanor Bowman ones are a bit small and too out there for us. We don’t want anything with a cow or cockerppo on it. Or anything blue or grey (as the kitchen is a blue & grey free zone).

I won’t even allow myself to look at their mug selection as I already have too many :(

Sophie all port?
cornish ware?

stormsurfer · 10/12/2025 00:50

Dunoon mugs come in all shapes, sizes and patterns.

ALittleBitofWensleydale · 10/12/2025 06:51

I feel the same about Emma Bridgwater, lovely but bulky.
Wrendale are very small.
i love Dunoon, so much choice in pattern and size, and nice and thin.

We have a couple of nice water colour striped and abstract floral mugs from Bluebell grey, they have a slightly similar hand painted vibe.
I know what you mean about Emma Bridgewater being too chunky!

I bet there are so many psychological assessments that could be made about people based on the type of mugs they favour 😆

I have some V & A bone china mugs.from their 'Inspired' range. They are based on Victorian wallpaper patterns. Mine are blue and white chinoiserie style, but I bought some pink and green floral ones for my daughter. They are very delicate to drink from. I found some blue ones on Amazon, but I think I originally got mine from Sainsburys.

So hers are china clay and you’re looking for porcelain.

Agree with Sophie Allport or Portmeiron?

LaurieFairyCake · 10/12/2025 10:01

Love that white company one 🥰

Cornishware - the classic is blue but they did lots of other colours

Aston Pottery is worth a look, similar style but not as thick.

Gisela Graham mugs are lovely.
I have a few Sophie Allport ones too but they are very fine china and feel very flimsy.

Owly11 · 10/12/2025 13:20

Polish pottery - the round mugs are lovely to drink from and the patterns are beautiful - a bit emma bridgewater. However they are expensive so they may be more something to build up a collection slowly rather than buy in bulk.

TeaAndStrumpets · 10/12/2025 13:35

Ooh , gorgeous @triplechoc I love those!

Sophie allport all the way for me but not the fine china ones she does a stoneware mug which sits beautifully in the hand

I bought a set of eight Churchill “paradise bird” mugs a few years ago when I had a revelation that I could decide which mugs went in my cupboard rather than sticking with an ugly mishmash. They are still going strong and are nice and bright and a decent but not silly size. They have quite a good range online, possibly worth a look.

HouseWithASeaView · 12/12/2025 00:14

I am slightly regretting I asked as I now have too much choice! On looking at Dunoon, I realised that that must be where a former colleague’s mug was from and always loved the look of that mug. But then I like some of the other ones suggested too!
I am curious why Emma Bridgewater has never diversified into different shaped mugs.
