Single Built-in Oven recommendations

Hi - our oven recently died, so we're in the market for a new one. Current is a not great Zanussi oven, which is pretty basic (but does the job) that was in the house when we moved in. DH and I love food and cooking, so we'd like something a bit nicer seeing as we're being forced to replace it. Looking to spend around £400.

Family of four. I'd like some kind of easy/self cleaning functionality.

Any recommendations, even if just brands to consider. I'd love a Miele but they all seem to be outside of our price range. Thank you! 😊

I’ve got an AEG Competence oven. Pyrolytic cleaning, touch screen controls, lots of modes/features for bread, baking, grilling and fan. You can store favourite recipes eg time and temperature. Really easy to use and I love it.

I’ve had no issues with AEG, Bosch or Miele ovens from a cooking / reliability perspective. But the Bosch and Miele ones we have re black, with rotary controls for selecting the temperature and mode. The rotary controllers are also black, with a raised, black, ridge to indicate position. It is really difficult in the evenings to see what mode or temperature has been selected, because the under cupboard lights are shaded by the overhang on the work surface. Many a time I have had to use the torch in my phone to adjust the settings 😂 So, if you’re going for a black one, check it’s either got push buttons and a digital display for temp and mode, or that I has control you can see in low-ish light :)

definitely pyrolitic @OldMaaa

This AEG has great reviews £329

I had Siemens before the current Neff. Both really good.. am not sure the Neff is any better despite the extra cost.

I’m also looking for a single built-in oven because the element in the Indesit currently installed here kept coming detached from the top of the oven and then sagged at both sides. Yes it was cheap but who makes ovens with self-melting elements? So… maybe avoid Indesit?

I have got my eye on a Bosch one currently, which is £150 off at John Lewis, it does the pyrolytic cleaning thing too. So glad to hear Bosch recommended. I have seen it mentioned about the controls on them, but our oven is at eye height so I am hoping it would be easier to see.

That sounds crap! This wasn't one of the brands I was looking at, but I appreciate the heads up. Will avoid!

If you live anyway near the Miele outlet (Abingdon) they will have ovens from £400

Ooh, I didn't know this existed. Thank you ! It's not too far from us. However having checked their current stock list they don't have anything anywhere near to our price bracket unfortunately. All the ovens they have listed are still in excess of 1k.

That's a shame, I know when we were there last there were quite a few around the £400/500 mark. They didn't have a pyrolitic one, so we bought one from AO but was £700 ish

@OldMaaa
I’m also looking for an oven and went to JL on Friday. They recommended me the special offer Bosch too! I wanted black but wonder that will be difficult to see as per @Tryingtokeepgoing says.

Did you decide on an oven? Ours arrives tomorrow!

Sorry for the late reply - I am back home where the oven is at the weekend so will see if I can take a picture that shows it for you! I think if it was mounted at higher it might be easier to see, but ours is in our flat and is under the hob!!

BeautifulSongsofLove · 13/12/2025 05:44

@OldMaaa @BOD which oven did you buy? Do you recommend it? Thanks

We got the Bosch Series 4 HQA574BS3B in Stainless Steel. We haven't got any complaints so far. I haven't used the cleaning features yet, or tried many of the different cooking options. But it is miles better than our old oven in terms of how evenly it cooks things (I no longer have to turn biscuits around half way through baking them to avoid one side being overdone). It heats up really quickly and is very spacious inside. Looks nice too.
