Best paint for stairvase and and handrail?

I am contemplating painting my staircase and want to change the handrail from its varnished looking dark wood to match the spindles in white. Can anyone give me any tips on how to prepare for this and what paint would be most durable please. I prefer a matt look but not sure how durable this would be for a handrail. I have 5 flights of stairs so I dont plan on ever doing it again !

Staircase - obviously!

Matt white will get filthy within a year, with the best will in the world. You'll need to use undercoat and a more glossy finish for white to allow you to clean it afterwards, and it'll take a couple of top coats. Do not cheap out and get trade/ownbrand stuff, use Dulux or better.

@TwelfthOfNever I think you are right. I was wondering about eggshell but I've never used that before
