Paint or replace doors

We have 2 internal glazed pine doors to kitchen and sitting room which are tired and dated but perfectly serviceable. I can’t decide if I should just paint them (maybe black?) or replace with new glazed pre finished oak ladder doors. It’s the cost of paint and my time v about £400 for new doors plus paying for installation. Here are the kind of doors I am looking at.

I suppose only I can decide but what would you do? Would it make a big difference having new doors? Is it worth the money?

Maybe a photo of the current doors would help? Also it depends what the rest of place looks like if the doors would tie in. Black seems like a really extreme colour.

Thank you for your thoughts - here are a couple of photos…maybe black is extreme but I don’t think white would work either.

I’m on team replace tbh. I get why you’d think of painting black but actually I don’t think whatever you did to those doors would look great then they will irritate you and you will replace anyway at some point.

Yes I think you are probably right…I’m so used to them now but they are not things of beauty! But we need them to be glazed or the north facing sitting room will lose a lot of light. I think I will just have to grit my teeth and pay up! Thank you for your thoughts!

Is the 400 with installation?

Sorry, I can see that installation is extra.

aracena · 19/10/2025 21:35

We’ve been quoted £250 for installation so whole thing is looking at £650-£700 so quite steep for something I just don’t like but works…but am very tempted to do it!

The living room door looks OK, the front doors a bit shite though I agree.

We have the same doors and when we moved in I painted them white - instantly looked miles better. I'd like to have replaced but it's an old cottage with wonky walls and just too much of a pain to sort out. I like the new doors you have chosen, but the old ones will look great lighter. Not too sure about black, plus it's hard to find a good black paint imo.

Have you had a look on pinterest? I think our tastes might be different (I want colour everywhere!) but I'd paint those a colour I'd love, and/or possibly cover the glass with colour or film. It depends on your taste really but I think they could look brilliant!
