I really hate my white shiny doors

hello, I’m looking for help with my horrible shiny white doors.

They will eventually be replaced with wooden doors.

I am going to paint them for the time being in a non shiny paint but do not know what colour. The cottage is old and all the walls are a creamy colour at the moment.

I think that if I could tone the shine and brightness down I could live with them for the time being.

Im ok at painting, I just want to get the colour right. What do you think would look best ?

Sorry I should have said, they are the internal doors. 10 of them.

Oh blimey - 10 doors is a lot of work. I hate painting woodwork. But if I was going to, I'd rub them down a bit and then paint them with an eggshell finish rather than a high gloss paint. I'd probably stick with white though.

I think a sort of sage or khaki green colour would look nice.

I would wait until they're replaced, why create more work for yourself

Shut your eyes each time you go through them, or keep them hooked open and hang coats and handbags over them so you dont see them as much

In fact thinking about it all our doors have something on them

Get nice pieces of fabric, thin cotton or linen type, pin them on the doors to cover the whole door.

Cover them with wallpaper.
I’ve done panels before. Or paint the bevel of the panel in a darker tone.

Well I had the same dilemma and decided to strip the old Georgian pine door back to wood, I’m about a week in ! It is so much work ! 😂Layer after layer of paint I’m now at the sanding stage but it’s all but broken my neck from all the leaning over !

Puzzledtoday · 12/10/2025 08:48

Painting would be a huge job . I’d paper them in a neutral paper that matches the cream.

Think I’d go dark - something like F&B Tanner’s Brown or Railings.

If they are glossy and old, there's a good chance it's oil based paint. You're gonna have to sand them, prime them with Zinsser and then paint. Otherwise the water based paint won't stick and will peel. Pain in the backside, for sure.10 doors is a lot.

Primer then tone them down with something like F&B Wimborne White or Pointing or Clunch if it’s an old house.

Take them to be dipped and stripped. They could be beautiful underneath
