Has anyone built over the stair box?

We have a box room which is my (absent adult) DS room.
it is small but he insists on having a double bed!
there is a box built over the stair slope in one corner. I’m thinking I could put an Ikea platsa wardrobe over it, which fits perfectly. He then wouldn’t need a chest of drawers which would help the room feel less cramped.
has anyone done this?
the box looks well made, 2x2 timbers on the edges, but I’m worried that the weight might break it, fall through the stairs, destroy the house and possibly kill someone?

If it's got a double bed in it, it's not a box room, just a small double bedroom!

We had a wardrobe built ( by a joiner) over a bulkhead and it was fine.

We have a wardrobe built by a joiner over the stairwell bulkhead. Room has an Ikea double sofa bed in it.

I put a (small) wardrobe on top of ours. It was like that for over twenty years.

I got a plasterer to build a cupboard there in my DSs old box room.
It was perfect for that. The person before me built a single bed over it with wardrobe space underneath.

My OH built a cupboard over ours, provided lots of useful storage and so well done you would never have known it wasn't standard. He even matched the cupboard door & handle to the bedroom door. The cupboard floor was quite high (because of the slope) but it had lots of shelving.

in our old house the previous owners had clearly closed it in as a cupboard then taken the door off- we discovered why; because it gets damp 😶

Thanks everyone, great to know, I’ll do that then.
re the damp, good point, I’ll pop a little crystal dehumidifier in there

I think it would be fine. If you are worried your stair box is particularly fragile then a built in cupboard distributes some of the weight onto the wall battens/fixings. If you have had people sitting and climbing on that box then it probably isn't that fragile.

Yes I have stood on it whilst putting stuff on the shelves

What size of Platsa Op - is it a two door one?
I have a similar box so just wondering

Twoshoesnewshoes · 04/10/2025 16:37

@Abominableday yes the 80x50 one, the tallest one
it fits perfectly with 10cm clearance to the ceiling
