What colour sofa(s)??

Help please!
I need to buy two sofas following an extension/room remodel and am currently being overwhelmed by choice.
We need:

  1. a corner sofa for the back room (fireplace and books) chimney breast is painted in De nimes, with school house white walls. The room is very dark with a wooden floor. There will be a rug at some point. I have no idea what colour this sofa should be, style wise I like the Bluebell from sofas.com, but might not work as a corner sofa.

  2. Front room trickier - need a small sofa probably 2-2.5 seats against wall then something to fill space in bay window. Would ideally like to seat 4 people (the room is basically a snug with large window, fire place and TV taking up 3/4 walls.
There is not enough room for another sofa & currently there is a bucket chair & an IKEA chair (? Poang) both in cream. The look is currently old people’s home (old sofa has a green tartan blanket on it covering a multiple of sins…)
wall colour is Timeless, there is red & green in fireplace tiles. like the idea of a green sofa but maybe too much in a small room, and want to avoid a year round Christmas theme.

I have been looking for 3 years …it is probably time to commit to something!
Any help very happily received.

Just reading your thread and feeling your pain! I also need two sofas and have been looking for years.

SharpPoet · 30/09/2025 08:01

The more I look, the more indecisive I get!

Yes me too! Have you considered the berry coloured Bluebell? It sounds like it would go with your room. I also look at sofas and stuff but then I can’t bring myself to spend so much on something I’m not even sure about.

jenthehen · 30/09/2025 09:19

I also keep looking at green sofas, more practical than cream but can’t get away from the Christmas feel as the only colour that seems to work with them is a deep red. I quite like ochre but we have an oak floor and it all seems a bit too yellow…..so on we go!
My family will no longer give an opinion on sofas.

Moonflower12 · 30/09/2025 10:31

I’m also joining the ‘too much choice’ sofa debate. Like @jenthehen my family will no longer truck any chat on sofas.

Welcome onboard @Moonflower12 what is it you’re looking for? Maybe if we describe our setting we could give unbiased opinions. I don’t want to post a picture of my room as it’s ‘outing’ but once you see a room I think it’s difficult to look beyond what’s there at the moment. So if mine were a blank space the following things would have to stay:
it’s an approximately 6m x3m room, dual aspect with mid coloured oak floor boards and oak windows one end and oak french doors at the other. The entry to the room from inside is central and directly opposite is a log burning stove with a sandstone hearth and a wooden mantel. We are in a rural village setting with stone houses. I need a 3 seater sofa to the left as I enter the room (facing the French window) and on the wall to the right of the internal door I could fit a 4 seater …any suggestions? I need curtains, rug and new colour on the walls, possibly wallpaper. It’s quite a big space but want it to feel modern country Cosy….

SharpPoet · 30/09/2025 13:51

Actually this is a good idea - we would (probably) be much more decisive about other choices.
Might do a diagram later

I’ve used AI to remove any colour etc from my room and this is basically it back to the bare bones…I still have no vision

What colour sofa(s)??
Moonflower12 · 30/09/2025 15:11

My room is quite small. In a rural, stone, Victorian cottage.
We can fit a 3 seater against the one wall and a small 2 seater against the other.
I’d like a dark velvet but I’m not sure how suitable this is with a spaniel who regards the sofas as hers. My DH would like a chesterfield, but I’m not sure of the comfort levels of these.
Our walls are also School Room white and we might do one wall Pigeon in the near future. We have purple curtains with bright pink and ‘pigeon’ coloured flowers. These could go. The floor is flagstones in the local stone ( dark grey) with a purple rug. Again this could go. We have light oak furniture and mantelpiece over the log burner.

@Moonflower12 your room sounds lovely. My first thought for yours was a rust or ochre coloured velvet sofa or one of each with chunky knitted throws, a jute natural rug. Keep the walls school room white. What colour is your spaniel? If it’s a tan colour it could really work.

jenthehen · 30/09/2025 17:45

And a wicker log basket or side table would be lovely.

cooldarkroom · 30/09/2025 18:15

Go neutral, you can add clour with cushions later
My sofas are Green/Grey, not Xmassy. & good for not showing dirt.
Also, one 3 seater & one 2 seater is better than corner sofa, you can put a small square table in the gap for a lamp. ( coffee cup/ TV Zap) & Further down the line you can change their position, move to clean ! , remove one or other &/or add an arm chair etc

Moonflower12 · 02/10/2025 16:43

@jenthehen
That sounds like a good plan. I’ll go and look at rust or ochre ones. The spaniel is a liver and white springer but she’ll still sort of tone in!

Hi all,
Thought I would apologise for starting a thread and not coming back to it - had a sudden family bereavement that has thrown everyone completely.
So in the spirit of life is too short, I threw myself into just getting stuff done and went and actually sat on some sofas with a commitment to actually buy something!
Settled on the Livie corner sofa from DFS - figured if we hated it, we haven’t wasted huge amounts of money and it ticks something off the list.

Good luck everyone 😊
