Does This Bed Look "Made" Enough?

Curious if people consider this an acceptable view of the bedroom for guests who may pass by the doorway? Bed was made in a bit of a rush & quite honestly I'm not a naturally tidy person, so I hope the state of the bedroom isn't too terribly offensive to anyone (ADHD to preempt a potential dripfeed) 😅 so I'm wondering what other people's opinions are?

Bonus questions,

-Do you generally leave your bedroom doors ajar, or completely closed when hosting friends?

-How often do you make your bed? Every morning, every night, only if guests, etc?

-Do you ever peek in other people's bedrooms if they leave the door open while you're at their at their house? 🙈 (and by "peek" I mean just a quick but observatory glance, not going into the room or anything!!)

TIA if you respond, I know this is a bit of a silly topic but I really do wonder what other people think!

To me this looks messy but then I am an exceptionally tidy person. Everything has to be unseen I. E I wouldn’t have the belts or clothes hanging in view and I know it’s not the bed as you asked but I think it makes the room look messy overall. My bed is fully smoothed with plumped pillows and no ruffles. I make my bed daily, and will smooth it over if I notice there’s any ruffles in the covers. I don’t peek in anyone’s room if I am passing. But if this works for you then it’s absolutely fine op.

murasaki · 06/09/2025 00:29

I'd straighten the top grey bit, the rest is fine.

PeonyBulb · 06/09/2025 00:33

I’d get rid of the grey crumpled blanket and colourful towel and put a smoothed out duvet on top

PeonyBulb · 06/09/2025 00:35

Also I’ve never seen anyone hang their belts and coats on random hooks in the middle of a bedroom wall. Very odd

RosesAndHellebores · 06/09/2025 00:43

Nope. That is not properly made.

@AliCatWalk when I have been selling, deep breath, I have ironed the bottom sheet and steamed very crease out of the duvet cover and pullow cases. I haave ensured the duvet is toyally equal in drop on each side and bottom which I have measured to ensure it is equal on each side and the bottom. Throw beautifully folded at the bottom. Pillows sitting perfectly

HotBathwater · 06/09/2025 00:57

Bedroom doors are always ajar unless someone is actually asleep in them. I make my bed every morning after breakfast, having left it to air while I’m dressing etc. I’m not a snooper, but I suppose normal enough to glance into a room you’re passing if the door is open. It wouldn’t occur to me to stand in the doorway and gawk.

The chief oddity about that room is the jackets and belts hanging on the wall. Doesn’t it make you feel as if you’re sleeping in some kind of cloakroom?

AliCatWalk · 06/09/2025 00:58

Aah, thanks for your replies! I have a hard time "recognizing" a mess (if that makes any sense...something I'm working on but still have a long way to go!)

@PeonyBulb it does seem quite random now you mention it 😆I thought the hooks would be a convenient way to hang things we don't have closet space for, was definitely pretty myopically focused on "function" without proper consideration to "form" when I put them in! But that's exactly the kind of observation that wouldn't even really occur to me, so thank youfor pointing that out😸

look, i would accept this from my 4yr old (yes my kids made their beds from the time they could stand and walk), and I would accept a room to appear like this from a teen who spends hours in their room on their bed reading, chatting to friends or listening to music.
but i would not accept this from someone over 18 during most of the day.
blinds up, windows open as well as doors from sun up to sun down basically.
now is this your own place? if so do as you please.
parents place still...you need to base this on their rules.

ForFunGoose · 06/09/2025 01:03

My son has adhd and likes things where he can see them. If things are tidied away he forgets he has them.
I like your room it looks very cosy, hotel style interiors are very impersonal imo.

Really shitty reply

AliCatWalk · 06/09/2025 01:07

Duly noted on the hooks! Definitely going to reconsider that wall space now 🤔

Your bedroom looks absolutely fine to me OP.

No-one should be judging you for it at all, it wouldn’t bother me in the slightest. Surely your friends are not so shallow that they’d judge you for this.

😂 It wouldn't be a proper MN post without at least one flaming!

No, not if guests are going to see it. My bedrooms are upstairs so there’s no reason for a guest to be looking in my room but I’d also close the door.
And no I don’t usually make my bed.

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/09/2025 01:21

I have ADHD too but I also have Google. I don’t make my bed because it’s healthier not to. Airing is good. Airing with sunlight is even better.

And people who do more, I hope they get joy from it. But judging others for not doing is batshit.

Newfigtree · 06/09/2025 01:24

No one needs to see where you have sex. Just close the door.

Nclow · 06/09/2025 01:27

I think if you were to put down a rug under your bed that was big enough - ie a rug that extended at least say 80cm all around the bed - your room would look instantly cosier and put together.

I know what you mean about out of sight, out of mind. But maybe your belts and hoodies could go on the back of the door or on the side of another piece of furniture? That might look tidier on passing.

Would you consider (if you're able to that is) switching the blue light out for a warmer, yellow bulb?

What about some very light linen or voile curtains panels to hang over the window, that you could pull across the cover the aircon unit?

I've given you lots of unsolicited advice / opinions, I apologise. So in answer to your questions:

Doors ajar
Beds made each morning after airing for around 30 mins
Absolutely! Not for a full on nose but definitely a decent peek!

viques · 06/09/2025 01:30

Re the hooks, use them to hang a couple of hangers, nice hangers, not wire ones, you can then hang up clothes you are planning to wear again, or clothes you have decided to wear the next day. Is the laundry basket where you dump clothes to be washed? I would look for something a bit smarter. Preferably with a lid.

Interesting! Hadn't heard that before, might have to pay a visit to Google myself to learn more...we do wash the sheets very regularly at least!

OP, if I was your guest and cast a passing glance at your bedroom as photographed here, I wouldn't think twice about it. It's your home and it's fine! If you want to hang your belts on the wall, go for it. It must work for you.
I say this as a fairly tidy person whose house is visitor ready most of the time.

BourgeoisBabe · 06/09/2025 01:34

Looks fine to me, wouldn't give it a second thought. And it's your room, have it how you like.

No apology necessary, your rug suggestion is great! Also your idea of putting the hooks on the back of the door. Thank you! And thanks for answering the bonus questions 😜 I'm sure there could be a whole other thread for things accidentally seen/left out in the open!

You're spot on about the laundry basket (we have a separate one for clean clothes which is in a different room atm) and it's definitely long overdue for a replacement. I will look for ones with lids now!

I think it looks fine but I’m also adhd and I also have hooks everywhere because of the out of sight out of mind - it’s called object permanence
