Does This Bed Look "Made" Enough?

Curious if people consider this an acceptable view of the bedroom for guests who may pass by the doorway? Bed was made in a bit of a rush & quite honestly I'm not a naturally tidy person, so I hope the state of the bedroom isn't too terribly offensive to anyone (ADHD to preempt a potential dripfeed) 😅 so I'm wondering what other people's opinions are?

Bonus questions,

-Do you generally leave your bedroom doors ajar, or completely closed when hosting friends?

-How often do you make your bed? Every morning, every night, only if guests, etc?

-Do you ever peek in other people's bedrooms if they leave the door open while you're at their at their house? 🙈 (and by "peek" I mean just a quick but observatory glance, not going into the room or anything!!)

TIA if you respond, I know this is a bit of a silly topic but I really do wonder what other people think!

Duly noted on the hooks! Definitely going to reconsider that wall space now 🤔

Can get those stickers hooks and put inside wardrobe that's where I put belts

LibertyLily · 06/09/2025 10:45

It looks ok, if a bit untidy and if I was having guests walking past the open door I'd want to smarten it up somewhat (neaten bed/different throw/open blinds/hide laundry basket)...and remove those wall hooks/belts/clothes which look a little student-y.

Our bed is made every morning and the room tidied (as much as is physically possible when the rest of the house is an ongoing renovation project - so currently it's full of cushions from a sofa!), although our style is maximalist so it probably wouldn't meet some people's clutter-free standards.

I always leave our bedroom door (and a window) open as I actually like to get a glimpse of the finished room - one of only two so far - because it inspires me for what else we have to do. I'm proud of how it looks, so - if we were in a position to accommodate them - would happily let guests take a sneak peek!

People are weird! Ironing the duvet forsooth!
Your room looks fine.
I personally do make my bed each morning, mostly to cover the pillows with a throw as otherwise the cat will sleep and shed on my pillow!

Jiski · 06/09/2025 21:34

It’s fine. Why waste time making beds when you can live your life? I don’t even make mine unless I’m going to sit on it. I don’t iron either.

Bigears6789 · 06/09/2025 22:02

I would shut the door. DH and I are both ADHD and our room has never been tidy. I have been trying to make the bed recently but it’s not a natural process for me 😂

Indeed! I've not ironed anything for 10+ years. We don't own an iron/ironing board anymore. That's partly why we choose linen bedding which - imo - looks best a bit rumpled, although when dressing a house for sale I tend to cover the (plain) duvets completely with patterned throws.

Lights22 · 06/09/2025 22:53

I think it looks fine. It's clearly made. Just not to show home/selling standards. It's your room.

In my house, doors are ajar when we have guests/visitors and I try to tidy what people can see but, seriously, it's my home.

Belts and coats on hooks. Fine. You have ADHD, you can see them so not forget them. You do you.

Who is judging your bedroom anyway?

pinneddownbytabbies · 06/09/2025 23:01

Speaking as someone whose bed usually has a cat-shaped mound on it - looks fine to me.

FlexiSadie · 06/09/2025 23:08

I don't make my bed. I wasn't brought up to and I don't understand the necessity. The bed gets aired because I discard the covers as I rise. I recognise that this sets me miles apart from most of mumsnet but I don't think it makes me a bad person? I'd be a shit addition to a mystery story though, because no one would know if my bed had been slept in before my disappearance.

Bearinthesmallmessyflat · 06/09/2025 23:09

I’m really surprised by the replies I’ve read so far on this page.
If anyone is you invite into your home is seriously judging whether you’ve your bed right they don’t deserve the invite.

I personally don’t make my bed, I fold my sheets back because I feel it’s more hygienic and I’ve never given any thought to wether our bedroom doors are open or shut before guests arrive or noticed which way my friends leave theirs when I visit them.

FlexiSadie · 06/09/2025 23:10

Oh, and I don't iron anything unless it's a funeral or an item of school uniform that has been screwed up.

My work (nhs) uniform goes in the dryer with a wet tea towel for ten minutes to straighten it out.

BarbarasRhabarberba · 06/09/2025 23:16

it looks tidy to me but I’m a naturally messy person. I make the bed maybe twice a year? I don’t make a special effort to clean or tidy if I’m having guests. Take me as you find me!

BarbarasRhabarberba · 06/09/2025 23:17

RosesAndHellebores · 06/09/2025 00:43

Nope. That is not properly made.

@AliCatWalk when I have been selling, deep breath, I have ironed the bottom sheet and steamed very crease out of the duvet cover and pullow cases. I haave ensured the duvet is toyally equal in drop on each side and bottom which I have measured to ensure it is equal on each side and the bottom. Throw beautifully folded at the bottom. Pillows sitting perfectly

This is pure insanity.

CoffeeCupOnBreak · 06/09/2025 23:23

My personal opinion is that bed making is such a waste of brain and physical energy I just don't bother. No one epse goe sinto my bedroom anyway. Best effort is to shake duvet and throw it over the bed. Most of the time it's actually half bend so top is uncovered because I don't like warm sheets when i lie in and warmth helps dustmites breed

AmericanPaint · 06/09/2025 23:46

I have my bed facing the door, grey headboard against the wall opposite. A large painting above the bed in complementary colours (greys, dusty pink and lilacs). Bedding pale grey cotton with an understated lilac/pink pattern, 4 pillows, then 4 decorative square cushions of 2 sizes, then 2 smaller cushions and a central rectangular cushion, all in complementary colours.

Pale carpets, white bedside tables either side of the bed with matching crystal lamps, with grey lampshades.

And a light shade hanging over the centre of the bed in chandelier style, but not overly fussy and not one of those plastic crystal ones.

Thats all you can see from the door. Nothing else on walls, no bits and pieces out. But then people often tell me my home is like a show home and they feel uncomfortable sitting down as they are scared to mess it up, so maybe you have it right and I have it wrong.

I came on to say something very like this: I deliberately 'unmake' my bed, with the bedding folded back, so it's not like I have just got out of it, an action has been taken.
I love how fresh and cool the bedsheets feel when I roll them back at night.

CoffeeCup14 · 07/09/2025 01:39

No-one is invited into my house who is going to judge me if it's messy.

I usually pull the duvet up enough to keep my cats off my sheets but that's it.

Your bed is 'made enough' if it's how you like it. A made bed is not a moral issue.

RightOnTheEdge · 07/09/2025 12:03

It looks absolutely fine to me OP.
If I glanced at your room I'd not think anything except it looks tidy to me.

I just straighten my pillows and give my duvet a shake.
I keep my window open all the time but my door shut.

WonderingWanda · 07/09/2025 12:06

Your bed and room look absolutely fine. No dirty clothes on the floor either which is a bonus!

dollyblue01 · 07/09/2025 12:11

I like a smooth quilt on the bed always looks better made and cosier, I’d open the blinds and window to let some light in the room , but it’s tidy.

katepilar · 07/09/2025 19:21

Its absolutely fine. Its YOUR bedroom. Close the door when you have guests. I wouldnt like anyone looking into my private space.

IzzyHandsIsMySpiritAnimal · 08/09/2025 12:39

I think the bed looks as though it's been sat on.
I can see both sides. I'd have put the hooks for belts and things either inside the wardrobe or behind the door, and the throw at the foot of the bed isn't to my taste, but that's rather besides the point.

It doesn't look untidy, but it doesn't necessarily look tidy either. It looks like an average room in a house.

FWIW, if I have people over, I have the bedroom doors closed.
