This carpet quote seems very high...

The room is small (15m2) and the carpet is £22 per square meter. The quote for fitting, underlay, grippers etc has come in at almost £900!

The actual cost of the carpet should be: £330 so I don't understand how the quote is now so high. Is this normal?

Fitting alone will cost you around £170-200 for a room of that size but it was a square, without lots of cuts needed.
You also need to consider a bit of extra carpet, as they come in specific widths. Assume you may get away with buying a 4x4m carpet, but it really depends on the shape of the room. You may need a 5x4m or even larger.
Underlays have a wide price range depending of your requirements. It can easily reach £100 if you want a more specific one with high absorption and TOG.
Grippers are really cheap, so that’s not the issue.
Delivery fee is usually charged for bulky items. So realistically you are looking for materials around £500 - £550. Plus fitting you can easily get to £750 ballpark.
Explore the option of buying the materials yourself and quote fitting only. It may be cheaper.

900 sounds expensive.
But you'll need more than 15m2 of carpet to account for the width of the roll and cutting to shape.
Try another shop! We got a fantastic deal off an independent carpet shop rather than a big chain.

We are just about to have a room re carpeted thats 28m2. The carpet is the same price. We don’t need new underlay or grippers, it’s coming in at £130 extra for the fitting, £50 for removal of old carpet. Total price is £770.

DongDingBell · 31/08/2025 08:05

I've just seen MH0084's response. I too had got to around 550 for materials, and then deleted the maths as there were too many assumptions!

Ive just ordered carpet for a dining room, stairs, landing and 3 bedrooms, 65m² so because it's a full roll it's £995 including underlay, grippers and fitting!

We’ve just had a quote for carpeting our lounge and hall: 59 square metres and it’s just over 3k. That also includes all fitting, underlay, etc. carpet is about £30 per metre.

It does sound like a lot for fitting. I’d go back to your carpet fitter and ask!

Mosaiccat · 31/08/2025 13:28

Thanks, I'll reach out and ask for a breakdown of the price. We have a few other shops locally so check with them too.

Definitely get more quotes for fitting. I pay £40 per room.

ghostyslovesheets · 02/09/2025 10:15

I had my landing and stairs done recently - cheaper carpet as it needs doing every couple of years (3 kids 5 cats), it cost £400 - fitting was £97 - including underlay

Every couple of years??? Surely it would be better to buy a more expensive, stain/proof carpet? They all have 10-year guarantees now…

our carpet is 25 years old…

Do you need new grippers and underlay though ?
