Rug for living room

Hi everyone. I need a new rug for my living room as the one I have is TINY and doesn’t go well with the sofa / rest of the room. But, Im really struggling to find one I like! Would this rug pair well with the wallpaper / furniture? I’ve asked Chat GPT and am out of uploads until tomorrow evening 😂

If it doesn’t “go”, can anyone recommend a nice rug? The wallpaper is Laura Ashley and has tones of blue, green, cream and yellows. The sofa is moss green and the curtains are beige.

The pattern is a bit fussy against the wallpaper for my taste.

i think id go for something plain/ less pattern picking out the colour of the flora in the wallpaper to tie it all together

I love colour and mixing patterns, so don't agree with @isitmytime, but these things are obviously subjective/down to personal taste.

The rug you're considering seems rather pale/washed out/bland to me.

However, I do agree that the rug you choose should include colours from the wallpaper and/or the sofas.

If possible it also needs to be large enough to sit under the front legs of your sofas, so as not to seem floating in the room.

I like the colour of the rug you have as it is reflecting the light in the room. I’d look for a bigger version of it or similar

I absolutely love the rug that’s in the photos in front of the fire with the sofas, may I ask where it’s from please?

I think a chequerboard style would look good and a bit more updated. Not black and white but maybe beige and white

@YourWinter its this one from Homesense but they’ve got a load online also 🙂 just search “Alia rugs” (sorry that it’s upset down - only realised now as I’ve gone to upload it!)

I think your wallpaper limits you. If you want lots of clashing patterns, as @LibertyLily suggests, I think it needs to be more deliberate — bolder patterns and stronger colours. I’d stick with a block colour rug, no pattern, but the key thing is that it needs to be much bigger than the one you have.

Bedknobsandbreadsticks · 09/08/2025 09:45

@NineTimesNine I agree, i don’t think I’m bold enough to go for clashing patterns, so I think my only real option is a plain block colour. Can you suggest one that would look nice? DH wants colour, I just want it to look nice 😂

The wallpaper is Laura Ashley Summer Palace Eau De Nil, and the core colours are soft cream, green and blue tones. My couches are moss green, which I guess amplifies the green tones in the wallpaper.

I’d probably go with the bluish green of your couches. A large, plain rug.

I think the rug you suggest is bland and boring, at least the colour. My sitting room has pale walls and mainly modern furniture, but what gives it the wow factor is a bright, deep coloured patterned rug (quite large), rusty red and other colours in a very traditional pattern. It anchors the space and marries the modern furniture together so the room looks pulled together and imo really classy! Could you do something similar with an interesting patterned rug in deep but bright colour? Doesn't have to match the wall paper colours but could perhaps intensify one of them. If it wasn't a sitting room, with your LA colours yellow would work well to amplify the colours you've got. Or what about a bright turquoise? You would need some touches of a warm colour in the room too, in cushions etc.

They don't have to be clashing patterns! I love maximalism and do follow Sophie Robinson on IG, but sometimes I think her style is a bit too contrived.

We go by the mantra that if you buy stuff you love and put it together, it should work. It takes time to be confident with colour/pattern/texture and I believe it helps that years ago I studied fashion and designed clothes for a short time.

When choosing textiles/soft furnishings including rugs, my advice would be to have a mix of scale amongst them - so large floral, small floral, stripe, geometric etc - and also to add in different textures, eg, a rug can be traditional wool, shaggy, flat weave (kilim) or something like jute/seagrass.

I'm adding some pics of our recent interior design choices (some of the patterns for our new living room - currently under construction - including a striped rug and floral curtain fabric, as well as a couple of the bedrooms). Almost everything has been sourced second hand or vastly reduced as we're doing our current house on a very tight budget!

I'd definitely be going with some colour - deep blues/greens, maybe some detail in a red/pink. Ruggable can be a good place for very large rugs, or a vintage kilim. I once bought some lovely vintage Laura Ashley rugs on Ebay for a bargain - might be worth having a look
