Cast iron/metal bed help

Hi
Currently decorating our bedroom and have ordered a superking mattress. Our room isn’t huge and the bed will take up most of it, but with 2 small children who spend a lot of time in it,it was a no brainer for us.
Because of this we can’t have a massive bed frame and most ottoman ones I’ve looked at add Antone 5-10cm on the width of the mattress.

How to people feel about metal/cast iron looking beds?
Our room will Be painted in skimming stone by farrow and ball, white PAX wardrobes with black handles. It’ll have a beige/cream warm toned carpet and my idea for the room was neutral warm where I could introduce some subtle colour like burnt orange or pale blues with cushions.

Can I ask which bed people like/prefer if any?

Sorry, OP, I don't like either of these.

A metal or cast-iron bed looks like a prison to me! (Probably hopelessly old-fashioned, but there it is.)

I don't like a lot of black in a bedroom and I don't think it would work with Skimming Stone.

Is there something that would be closer in colour to Skimming Stone? I think that would pull it all together in a more attractive way.
Also, if you're concerned about space, have you seen any platform beds without the storage?

SB1712 · 03/08/2025 19:21

I don’t like platform beds really. I think they look quite teenager ish or the ones I’ve seen anyway. It doesn’t feel master bedroom enough for me but happy to see some others.

unfortunately, as much as I’d like a cream or white metal bed frame they don’t actually have any that I can find in a super king which is why I feel like I’m a bit limited.

We got a standard drab divan base with drawers but pimped it up with a kick arse headboard - had the one I wanted shipped in from Malaysia in the end and it looks awesome. Bed ‘feet’ often get lost anyway especially if room is small so I’d look at a big standard base and a lovely lovely headboard

I had an iron bed for years, loved it. Used underneath for storage. Looked good and was sturdy.

CanOfMangoTango · 03/08/2025 21:26

Are you/DH able to lie on your front on the bed without touching the bars on an iron frame? Just something to be careful of if you haven't checked.

I have a brass bedstead in a similar style to the pictures. Fashions come and go, and I guess brass is out of date, but I daresay it will come back in sometime, but I don’t care anyway. I particularly like the tall “footboard” which means I manage to miss stubbing my toes/whacking my knees on the bed frame as I move around the room, often in the dark. This may be a particular consideration for you since it sounds like there won’t be too much space around the bed.

I love my iron king size frame, very similar to the black one in the right hand pic. Soooo easy to clean and assemble, especially in a 200yr old cottage.

I have dust allergies so no divans for me!

Btw, I had a super king when my DC were small but downsized to a king because I was just spinning about in the SK all night and I'd never know which way up I'd wake. They're brilliant with young DC who like to share.

Have you looked at Feather & Black?
They seem to have a lot of Super-King choices in colours that would work with Skimming Stone.

Ive had 2 metal bed frames in my life (one black double and then a white kingsize) and they both fecking squeaked like hell after the first 6 months 🥹

I don't know why i put myself through it twice. Guess i thought spending a bit more (the white one) might mean it wouldn't squeak. Wrong!

We took it apart and added rubber washers ect ect but squeak squeak bloody squeak !

We got a wooden one now and it's much better 👍

We bought a super king mattress when living at our last house which had a decent size main bedroom. We'd previously had a brass (black) bed frame, but preferred to go with something that didn't have a foot board this time as we felt it made the room feel more open. So we opted for an end-lift ottoman base. The one we chose doesn't take up any more space than a metal bed frame.

We now have a smaller (cottage) bedroom as we use the main bedroom as a tv room, so the lack of foot board makes even more sense. Plus living in a cottage - albeit a three bed - with less storage, the ottoman base has really come into its own.

We couldn't find a headboard we liked so I painted one straight onto the wall - which takes up even less precious space!

In your case @SB1712 I definitely wouldn't choose black or silver, but would try to find something in a colour more like Skimming Stone.

Just get any decent metal bed frame (new or second hand) and paint it in the colour of your choice. I painted an old black bed frame green with gold knobs. Looks great and I moved house twice

I bought an ivory metal frame with a mesh base (no slats) from this place back in 2017:

it’s amazing - best brand new furniture I ever bought (I generally prefer vintage/used stuff). I was particularly keen on buying something that was robust enough for (ahem) night time activity but was completely silent (teenaged children on the other side of the wall). 8 years later and it’s never squeaked at all!

I can’t see my exact style but it was about £600 for a double if I recall correctly.

edited to add: they make them to order so you can deffo get a superking made up in a light colour.

I bought DS an iron bed from The Original Bed Company a few months ago and I’m well impressed with it. Really sturdy and there are loads of customisation options for drawers if needed. I’m going to get another for when I replace DD’s bed next year.

They're also made in the UK which is a nice plus.

Another vote for OBC. I also have a Skimming Stone bedroom.
