How would mumsnetters feel about this?
Had a labour only quote for some work to be carried out. Was told it would take two people four weeks, it’s taken one person three weeks. The cost is nearly £7k. Thoughts?

How was the quote broken down? If it said something like: Labour two men/ two weeks at £X/day and only one person did it in less time then I say I’d only be paying for one person at the agreed day rate. If they quoted £X for Labour to do XYZ without specifying how many workers or length in the quote then that’s the quote. If you thought the job was worth the £7k then does it matter? Though £466/day is pretty good going. How did they justify the original quote?

What was the work?

Northernladdette · 02/08/2025 07:59

Landscaping.

That quote would surely have taken into account the wages for two people and the time spent. I'd definitely question it.

TrustedTheWrongFart · 02/08/2025 08:04

How was the quote worded?

Northernladdette · 02/08/2025 12:43

The quote was based on two people working on the job for four weeks.
Also, half way through the job, he’s said he only quoted to level the lawn, not level and re-turf 🤷‍♀️

So it explicitly called out 2 people for 4 weeks, so 40 days effort?

slightlydistrac · 02/08/2025 20:37

Two people x 4 weeks is the same as one person for 8 weeks. It took them only three weeks.

You need to pay only 3/8ths of the labour element of the £7k if you ask me. I'm assuming that part of the cost was for materials, so that would stay the same. Did they give you an itemised breakdown?

SecretNameforMN · 02/08/2025 20:53

I agree with slightlydistrac. Pay them that proportion. If they are not happy they can take it to the county court and let a judge decide.

It was a labour only quote. The hours/persons info was verbal.
