Would this look ok as a coffee table?

I want to buy a coffee table for my living room but would also like to be able to hide some of the things my family use in the living room when they're not being used, such as an electric blanket, headphones, a massage gun).

Would something like this look ok or would it just be bulky and ugly?

We can't fit a sideboard because we have a piano and two sofas.

Thank you.

Yes, but every time you want something you'll have to move all the mugs/tv remotes/books/clutter. It'd be nice for keeping blankets in.

RentalWoesNotFun · 24/07/2025 17:02

What about a unit like that but with a shelf ie a gap in the middle instead of sides, so you can put cups and magazines etc on top and perhaps some baskets in the middle section with your stuff in them?

AltitudeCheck · 24/07/2025 17:04

Shelves look untidy, a table like the one you shared but with a side door or sliding door would be better.

Pinty · 24/07/2025 17:07

I think you'd find you'd stop putting things innit because it would be such a faff takikg everything of the top to take them out.
Can you get something with drawers or a low cupboard?

SleepingisanArt · 24/07/2025 18:07

We have a proper height coffee table which has invisible drawers at either end. You push them to open and then push again to close. I think the blanket box will be too tall and will be a pain to use.

The answer is a large wooden tray for the top, so just one thing to move if you need to access the contents. A friend of mine has just such a setup in her lounge.

It might be annoying if it’s positioned in a place you’d naturally stretch out and put your feet under.

I did a very big double take when I read that you kept a ‘massive gun’ in your living room….

MerylSqueak · 24/07/2025 18:48

Oh thanks. Lots to consider there. I like the fact it's not self assembly as I think they tend to be better quality.

I really appreciate all the ideas. Thanks again.

Unless you've actually seen it in real life, I'd say probably not. There are no photos of the back. It's likely that the back isn't finished the same as the front because it's not designed to be seen. Also, although the photos might give the impression that the lid has the same size lip on all for sides, it's more likely to not have any lip at all at the back so that it can sit flush against a bed or a wall. For a coffee table you need something made to be seen from all sides.

MerylSqueak · 24/07/2025 18:50

That's a good point too. Thanks.

You could maybe try emailing them and ask for a photo of the back of it.

I have two blanket boxes. One of them (old M&S one) opens at the top and the front. (Maybe this type is what you should be looking for?) The back is a mirror of the front so designed to be seen from all angles.
The other one (Ducal) just has top opening but, again, has a decorative back panel.
