Duvet covers. Can you buy ‘hotel style’?

We recently bought a super king bed. It’s lovely. Obviously I had to buy new bed linen, so I splashed out on Rise & Fall. The sheets are amazing and the pillow cases are fine. But the duvet cover…
I bought a cheapish super king duvet, which was just rubbish, so I spent a goodly amount on a John Lewis one.
the problem I have is the duvet does not fill the cover, it appears too short and not wide enough. It’s definitely a SK duvet and definitely a SK duvet cover. It’s the same with a M&S duvet cover I have.
so, does anyone know where I can buy an actual super king size duvet cover, with the slits in the corners like you get in hotel covers? I think this is the only way I can make sure that I get the duvet into the corners properly. Seeing that sad 6inch strip of unfilled duvet cover is annoying me daily.

Most likely you have the duvet cover on the wrong way round! With a super king, there is definitely a “right” way round as although they look square, they’re not. Try swivelling the duvet 90degrees within the cover and it should fit

We bought a duvet set from Ikea and the duvet cover has the slits at the top which are indeed very handy.
HOWEVER, you need to check the measurements carefully for Ikea bedding as they tend to be in cm, not feet.
This one does seem to fit our duvet (which is for a 6 ft wide bed) and the quality is fine, it's all cotton although not as smooth as cotton sateen.

Unlike double duvets, super king sizes are not square! The longer edge should go across the bed. As the pp said, turn the duvet round 90 degrees.

We have various duvets and covers and each time we make a bed up we fold the duvet corner to corner to check if it’s a square and if not orientate it correctly on the bed. Any new duvet, take measurements so that when you buy new covers they match. Ikea duvets are best matched with Ikea covers.

Vision linens supply some commercial places and have the end where you tuck under the mattress no zips or poppers

I have tried it both ways round. It’s bad both ways, just a bit worse the “wrong” way.

I have rise and fall on a SK duvet and fits perfectly well do have to get it right way round. Are you sure the duvet itself is the correct size ?

I have had this exact issue! New bed, new bedding, we ordered our bedding from dusk, it didn’t fit well at all, I couldn’t be bothered for the send it back battle as we had washed it, got some new from secret linen company, thought I had the same issue, but when I moved the quilt round a bit it fit. Now it fits perfectly on super king.

I ordered the super king quilt and cover from dusk and it just didn’t fit well, madness.

I hope so, it’s a JL feather one, the packet and ticket say it’s a SK!

We have Super King Size bed linen from Bedding Envy that fits very well, absolutely lovely cotton as well. We also have some duvet cover sets from Scion and they fit well too.

One of the things we have noticed is that labels sewn on duvets tend to be on the sides (short edges).

Celestetaylor · 04/03/2026 07:45

We had the same issue with our super king. Everything was labelled the right size but the duvet never quite filled the cover and you get that annoying empty strip. Hotel style corner openings do help because you can pull the duvet properly into the corners. Also the quality of the cover makes a difference. Heavier cotton tends to hold the duvet in place better. We switched to a cotton duvet cover set from Leruum and the fit has been much better than the ones we had before. It sits much more evenly and actually looks like a proper hotel style bed once it’s on.

Just sew it up the side however much you want to reduce it by.

I used to run a B & B , bought all my bedding from here ( took some with us when we retired and it’s still lovely )
You don’t have to buy industrial amounts !

They have the hand hold bits at the bottom , ( or the top , I suppose ) and I leave a bit of a gap and tuck that bit under with the bottom sheet
