Amtico or Karndean?

TipsyFairyHic · 24/07/2025 07:44

what is the difference between Amtico and Karndean?

I always assumed Karndean was inferior.

However, it would be great to buy the flooring through J Lewis ( we may get points on our credit card with them) and their store is far closer to us to see samples compared to Amtico suppliers.

I already have Amtico in my kitchen, hall, cloakroom and one bathroom.
So I feel a certain pull to it but....

This would be for our living room and I'd also use rugs.

No pets, no young children (only grandchildren).

Realistically, we may only be in this house for another 10-15 years as a move is possible. So long-term wear isn't a huge issue.

Any ideas?

I will ask my brother for you. He owns his own floor-fitting company 😊
Bear with me.

Pretty much identical in quality as far as I can gauge. Karndean in old kitchen for 14 years, rock solid never an issue, didn’t lift when washing machine flooded. Also in Bathroom for 8 years still in excellent condition.
Amtico in new kitchen, 5 years and all good but don’t like the surface (my bad choice, holding well despite an issue with the under floor). So I’d say go for the one that does the product you like.

Also consider Polyflor Camaro.

I've had Karndean in my hall, living room and a large open plan kitchen/dining & living area for 7 years and it's absolutely pristine. We haven't been careful with it, just got on with our lives.

This is his reply. I don’t think it’s overly helpful in the context of your question, but I’ll post it anyway. Plus, he is a flooring genius/perfectionist!

Hey. Amtico is the original luxury vinyl tile company.
Karndean is another LVT company.
I think you probably pay too much for both and the quality could be better.
They do different ranges so it just depends on what range you go for.
There are probably better luxury vinyl tile companies for quality for your money.

Didntask · 24/07/2025 19:26

We've had both. I prefer Amtico, Karndean had a slight sheen to it which I didn't like and bleached where the sun hit it. Got Amtico now and much happier with it.

Only read the title and thought it was a baby names thread 😂

I did loads of research into this before fitting over 100 m sq of floor and basically concluded that as long as the base it goes down on is completely level and it’s properly fitted, it makes no difference. The colourway/pattern is what will make it look expensive or cheaper. So for example the Amtico off white floors that I viewed did not look as good as some of the more natural looking Karndean ones, even though Amtico was more expensive.

Titasaducksarse · 24/07/2025 19:58

Harvey Maria is an option too

It's really weird as online there are different opinions.
Some places say Karndean has better wood (what I'm looking at) and another site says Amtico do!
One comment I didn't like was Kardean wood looks more glossy (don't want glossy) but maybe it's subjective.

Whatever you do don’t get the wood one with an actual rough grain effect. Much more annoying to clean and it wears through socks like a bugger!

Mardyybum · 24/07/2025 22:19

We have Karndean, a stone tile effect which initially looked great.
However it’s now been in a year and has several noticeable scratches.
We have 2 young DC and a dog, so if you don’t have them it may be ok. I wouldn’t have it again though.

SunnyViper · 24/07/2025 22:27

I have Karndean in my living room and hall. It’s been down for 15 years and has been hammered. Looks nearly as good as when it first went down. I have Amtico in my kitchen and dining room and this has worn more and has more scratches.

Summerholidayze · 24/07/2025 22:36

I wondered this but chose Karndean as it had exactly the colour and width we liked. It’s wearing well.

AchMensch · 27/07/2025 13:35

When I got Amtico laid I was told that it was made in England,as opposed to Karndean coming from China.

If that is in fact the case, I'd rather buy Amtico (which has withstood my dog's large sharp claws for years).

TerminalMoraine · 27/07/2025 14:33

We have Amtico in our kitchen which has been down for 21 years. It has a few scratched but otherwise is fine. No cracks, splits or lifting.

This is the case. Karndean is manufactured somewhere in Asia, Amtico is manufactured in Coventry.
