Rugs on top of carpet makes my teeth itch.

I used to buy rugs to put on top of carpet to protect from spills when DC were small. The rugs always travelled and rucked up, however much I added rug grip and bought heavy good quality ones. I gave them all away in the end.

A carpet layer told me it is to do with the underlying carpet. If it has a weave in a certain direction, rugs will travel. My yoga mat always ends up 45 degrees from straight after a few minutes too.

@fireplaceember must have a carpet which doesn't push the rug around in weird directions. Or have some other secret for keeping it straight.

I tend to assume it’s covering up old stains, because that’s what our kilims were for in our last house.

We have one because the bit where you sit is where the carpet will wear out if not.

Yeah it doesn’t move at all

I hate my carpet- ideally want hard floors but for the time being a rug is a cheaper option…..I am so undecided though!
have just cleaned said carpet within an inch of its life so let’s see how it comes up…..2 young boys, a dog and a cat do not help! 😊

Yeah I’ve had runners on top of hallway carpets after the carpet had become pretty worn - it’s definitely a compromise isn’t it. Don’t remember having an issue with the rugs travelling though. Maybe because the carpet pile was so mashed flat (it was cheap, 100% no wool whatsoever carpet).

In another flat, which had a much better quality carpet, I found dry brushing the thoroughfares almost as good as the Vax carpet cleaner in terms of appearance. But don’t think that’s practical with two kids added to the dog and cat mix I had (unless you can persuade one of the boys that it’s a fun activity?)

This. See also carpets / rugs in kitchens and bathrooms 😬

I think it is fine as long as the rugs are big enough. They need to nearly fill the space.

Bathrooms yes…we have to have them in the kitchen as the kids wreck the floors swinging on bar stools so have to have a runner under!
may be easier to rehome children 😂
