What neutral colour?

Hi. We are looking at redecorating the whole house. Hasn’t been done for 8-10 years so needs a refresh. I really want to use the same neutral paint colour in all rooms then use accent wallpaper as I’m fed up with all the wasted tins of paint and storing them. Most of the rooms are currently a shade of grey or off white. Would just having one colour in all rooms work? Just worried that it won’t always go with the wallpaper we choose

Don’t know about wallpaper, but I’d be worried that using the same colour everywhere would look nice on some walls and not others, even with a neutral.

This is based on my experience with Dulux Fine Cream and Dulux Timeless.

I have Timeless in the back room, which faces south, and it looks the same colour as the upstairs of the hall, which is Fine Cream.

The downstairs hall is also Fine Cream… but one wall has quite a green tinge, which is not at all what I wanted (and the only bit of the hall I can see from the sofa).

Also, if you look at a paint colour comparison online, Dulux Fine Cream and Farrow & Ball Pointing are almost indistinguishable. But I had a sample pot of Pointing so I recently tested it against Fine Cream on the wall with the green issue - attaching a pic (taken with a flash).

Anyway, it could be worth considering two neutrals, one for south facing and one for north facing? (And don’t waste your money on Dulux 2-for-1 emulsion offers in B&Q, whatever colour you pick!)

Our favourite neutral colour is Skimming Stone by Farrow and Ball. You can get it colour matched which is obviously cheaper than F&B.

It’s a lovely colour, goes with everything and I never get bored of it!

We have Little Greene Clay mid. It looks yellowish on their website, but it’s a lovely warm pinkish neutral in our living room.

I’ve gone greige everywhere and I love it.
I’ve even colour washed the skirting boards and door frames. It’s Johnstones China clay and a good foil for busy floors and lots of pictures.

Thank you. I do have Timeless in the kitchen that’s south facing. I never really thought about the light so thank you. Most of the rooms face south so well worth looking at the colours in them rooms

Just worried it won’t always go with the wallpaper - you need to choose wallpaper it will go with. You’ll have less choice, but it will look better. Or the other way around - if there are any papers you are desperate to use, start there and match the paint to it.

We have one neutral colour throughout, but lots of accent paint. All the accent colours art in the same palette, which made finding a complimentary neutral easier and makes the whole house look more cohesive.

You cannot go wrong with Egyptian cotton in my experience. It looks different in lots of different lights but I like it.
