Get an interior designer to help. Sounds expensive at first, but helps you save money in the long run as less likely to have to re-do the job.

If you don't have money for an interior designer then only do a room at a time and start with the ceilingand work down. Are the walls in a good state?

I may be making assumptions but as the OP says “offered a house” I’m leaning towards her not being in the market for an interior designer.

what sort of condition are the walls in? A lick of paint is cheap, easy and makes a world of difference, even if it’s over ghastly wallpaper or horrid colors. If there are big holes or gouges get some ready mixed filler and some sandpaper to smooth them out.

Dunelm paint is cheap and good. Get some brushes or rollers, I prefer brushes, less waste, less messy, but lots prefer a roller. Your choice.

make life easy and do the ceiling the same as the walls. It’s all the rage as “color drenching” but you’ll save time and heartache cutting in.

Woodwork needs an eggshell or satin. I wouldn’t bother sanding cos life’s too short. Wash woodwork down with sugar soap. Go slow and careful with a 1/2 inch brush.

Give the kids room two coats and get their space sorted first.

Get trade pure white emulsion.
If the walls are wallpapered, remove it.
Wash all the walls down with sugar soap solution.
Paint all the ceilings and walls white.

Live with it for a year, and paint it in colours then, if you want to.

It takes a while to get used to the levels of natural light during the day and seasons.

Don't be tempted to go for an off-white like magnolia. They look grubby in some rooms.
