Sofa help, please! Is the IKEA Vimle any good?

Hi everyone - we need to pull the trigger on a new sofa but it feels like a massive decision so I’m stressing.

Criteria are as follows:
Large sofa with chaise
Beige colour
Removable and washable covers
Can handle some wear and tear

We have a five year old and a toddler so we don’t want to spend a fortune on a fancy one, but equally, it needs to be durable and cleanable. Would the IKEA Vimle fit the bill? I’ve done a bit of research but the threads are a few years old now so I’m keen to hear from recent purchasers - thank you!

I’ve had one and I ended up getting rid of it because it wasn’t comfortable. It’s low as well.

HugelyExpensiveCrystalDuck · 23/04/2025 20:28

One of the most comfortable ikea sofas is an Erktorp. The shape isn’t as modern though. There are videos on YouTube on how to hide the skirt part.

Best quality is Stockholm but it on,y comes on one colour a year.

RedPandaFluff · 23/04/2025 20:33

Thank you, @HugelyExpensiveCrystalDuck- I dismissed the Ektorp as I didn’t like the look of the skirt so that’s useful. In what way did you find the Vimle uncomfortable - too firm?

We have an ikea vimle in gunnared beige. I'd say it's more grey than beige though. We have a 2 seater and footstool. We've had it 2 years, have 3 very messy kids, and it's stood up well. I find it comfy and we have washed the covers several times and they wash really well and are easy to get on and off.

RedPandaFluff · 23/04/2025 20:42

Sounds promising, @joleyn- thank you!

I think you need to sit on them. I've always found the seats on IKEA sofas to not be deep enough. I didn't feel they really took the weight off my feet.

ladygindiva · 23/04/2025 21:49

I have an ektorp SO COMFORTABLE

LadyGreySpillsTheTea · 23/04/2025 21:55

We have a Vimle 3-seater with chaise and absolutely love it. After 5 years the cover (something grayish-black with a soft fuzzy texture) is starting to wear a bit, as we did a lot of sitting on it in lockdown! We find it really comfy, but sofas are like mattresses - one person’s definition of comfy will differ from the next. We have the sofabed version and guests have also said that’s really good too. Looks much more contemporary than Ektorp, but classy too.

I think you’re right, @SwedishEdith, we need to go to Ikea. @LadyGreySpillsTheTeathank you - sounds promising!

The bottom cushions just felt like sitting on a massive sponge.

Its definitely a good idea to go and sit on them if you can.

LadyGreySpillsTheTea · 24/04/2025 23:13

Actually, I have just remembered one tiny Vimle quirk, but I think it’s specific to the sofabed version: if you plonk yourself down on it too heavily the springs make a weird ‘boing’ sound for a few seconds. We’ve got used to it but it does startle guests somewhat.

haveiwokenup · 24/04/2025 23:28

I have the vimle, wasn’t expecting much but I absolutely love it! It’s so so comfortable and definitely worth considering!

4catsaremylife · 25/04/2025 01:58

We have a vimle 2 seater and sofa bed I love them the sofa is firm but comfortable the sofa bed with a mattress topper is okay for a few nights my grown up daughter assures me when she visits.

annekeegan · 25/04/2025 04:00

Also love our Vimle!

letsnotIRL · 25/04/2025 04:11

We have 2 small DC too and looked at the same sofa, ended up going for the Landskrona instead. I just think with little ones leather is so much easier to keep on top of !
We're really happy with it though, especially the colour. It's so comfortable and looks beautiful.
Ignore my newborn photo bombing 😅

Oh it’s lovely @letsnotIRL- I hadn’t considered leather but maybe I should. I have memories of it being cold to sit on in winter and hot and sticky in summer so that’s probably why - do you find that? Also, congrats on your newborn 😍

letsnotIRL · 25/04/2025 09:16

@RedPandaFluffhonestly I don't feel like that, but we've always had leather, big family lots off little DC, fabric would never have lasted 🙈 we use a lot of cushions and throw overs in the winter, my DS2 especially loves a good fluffy throw over! This is new I've only had it about 6 weeks, but it's supposed to be a new type of not hot or cold leather if that makes sense? I just know it's really comfy.
They do so many different sizes in this too, and a gorgeous armchair. I wanted the U shape one but it didn't quite fit. And thank you 🥰 were still in the newborn bubble it's great. Let us know what you decide to go with I'm invested now ha.

Ps, my DS2 just spilt yoghurt on it this morning, definitely pleased I went leather again!

letsnotIRL · 25/04/2025 09:26

@RedPandaFluffme again ha, just to say we went for the 4 seater corner and it's a really good size! As you can see 😅

IBloodyLoveMyBlanket · 25/04/2025 09:51

Definitely look at the Vimle in person, it's much more of a silver grey, as a PP said. I ruled it out for that reason, but thought it was really comfy.

RedPandaFluff · 26/04/2025 14:39

You’re definitely winning me over to looking at leather, @letsnotIRL- is it quite durable in terms of scratches? Do you have to condition it or anything? And I’m envious of the newborn snuggles - my youngest is 18 months now and I pine for the days when she was happy just to snooze in my arms instead of rampaging around following her older sister! Enjoy every minute 🥰

OP posts:
RedPandaFluff · 26/04/2025 14:41

@IBloodyLoveMyBlanketI’m a bit undecided on colours - I thought cream/beige but actually it might prompt me to paint . . . yeah, I really just need to get myself to an Ikea and make a decision!

I'm lazy and just buy leather clean wipes or a leather spray and cloth it takes 5 mins! Honestly with small DC I wouldn't buy anything else. Erm no I've never had an issue with scratches ? But no pets either so might be different for everyone?
Thank you 🥰 we are just all loved up at the moment, enjoying the newborn snuggles and the feral toddler 😅 good luck choosing!!
