Help with what to do with internal doors that are currently shiny white.

I’ve recently moved into an old cottage which I am doing up.

Until I can get the doors replaced with something more in keeping, what can I do with them.

The doors are the type that you see a lot of, with four panels. I think my biggest issue is they are shiny very white gloss paint.

The bright white looks very un cottage like plus the glossy shine is too much.

Any suggestions what I can do until the doors are changed?

I don’t really want to spend loads as the doors will eventually go.

Thank you for reading.

I would paint them a matt colour, maybe a green colour or something to match your cottage. You can get some paint that makes it look like wood grain that looks quite good.

I painted over white gloss (but old, so no longer super shiny) woodwork with a dark Farrow & Ball Modern Eggshell and it's holding up well so far.

I think eggshell is the way forward. Google tells me that it is low sheen, so I think that’s what I’m after.

Yeah, in the places I didn't want dark woodwork, including interior doors, I used a white Leyland acrylic eggshell and it's worked really well too.

I just did the exterior front door in a matt finish and as chic as it is, I can already tell that it's not going to look good for long. It's not just about how robust the paint is – Chat GPT warned me that dirt clings more to matt paint and it's actually right.

Eggshell is nice and will still give you a little bit of the shine.

If the doors were painted a while ago, they might have used an oil based paint. If so, you will need to sand and prime with Zinsser BIN.

Yes the doors have got the glossiest gloss paint know to man on them. I will sand them first before painting.

I would recommend F&B Wimborne White in modern eggshell. It looks like a normal white until you compare it to bright white and then you can see it is more subtle. Works really well on interior doors / woodwork if you don't want a colour but also don't want bright white.
