Carpet or engineered wood?

Currently have worn out carpet in living room, dining room and hall. Has had some moth damage too, so wouldn't go for wool again. Is non-wool carpet durable? Nice? Does wood get scratched easily (no pets) or damaged by heavy furniture (heavy bookcases etc.) or vacuuming? Like the look of wood, but less cosy? Looking to replace what we have with lightish colour wood or carpet.
Any insights welcome! Thanks.

Hard vs soft flooring is a totally marmite thing, so you'll get staunch advocates for both :D Really only you can choose this. Both have huge upsides and huge downsides.

I shan't go on about them because I have a huge pro-carpet bias, can't stand hard floors at all, so it wouldn't be very useful to you.

Thanks! Just want to make sure I know what the huge upsides and downsides are, before I take the plunge!

I laid brushed oak engineered wood flooring in the hall and living room 8-9 years ago, and it looks as good as new in the living room (better in fact, as it gains a patina with age), and good but a tad grimy in the hall. The carpets I had put in upstairs at the same time distinctly do not 😬.

I think the key is to get a brushed and oiled finish which brings out the natural grain of the wood, rather than lacquered, which is dead flat and shiny, hence shows every scratch.

The instructions for the Costco laminate says not to use a mop. How do you clean yours please?
