Window blinds?

Our house has a large window to the downstairs sitting room. The sun is a real problem in the summer and we end up drawing the curtains, which I hate.

What would you use to cover the window to offer shade from the sun (mainly so we can watch the telly!)

Our lounge is the same, we put a venetian blinds up, now we can tilt the blind upwards to block the sun but the rooms still light. Far better than shutting the curtains!

I had the same issue. I brought a tension rod blind made to measure for the recess from 247 blinds. I can have it down as far as I need too stop being blinded by the sun but curtains remain open.

Depends on the era and style of your home. You could get a double curtain pole and have floor length sheer muslin curtains you can pull across.

Or 24/7 blinds have sheer blinds or white wood Venetians made to measure. But I think with curtains sheer blinds work best.

I also had the same problem with a large window and excessive sun glare. Curtains will darken the room, so I changed to solar or light-filtering roller shades — they reduce the strong glare but allow natural light to come in. Another option is wood or faux-wood blinds, as you can tilt them to minimize direct sun but maintain a bright room.

If you want something a little more custom and fashionable, plantation shutters also do the job well and are great for light control.
