Internal doors - confused!

We need to replace about 13 internal wooden doors as they are knackered and the handles are going. I’ve been to both Howdens and Wickes and seems only pre finished doors are available. When I asked what that means, basically you have to finish them off yourself by painting/staining. I haven’t got the time or inclination to paint that many doors myself what with full time work and 4 kids, what do other people do? Do they sell finished doors anywhere, and if so, where. Just want to find finished doors that I can get a handyman to fix. Any wisdom gratefully received

Well I just googled finished internal doors and found many many finished internal doors so…
You’ll just pay more!

Don’t buy the Howdens ones. We replaced all our doors with them a few years ago and every single handle is knackered.

You can get ones already finished but need to take into account that each door might need to be shaved/adjusted to fit in which case it'll sabd the finish off. We've just had howdens unfinished doors fitted, similar amount, and DH oiled them which didn't take too long at all.

2 years ago we had 14 doors replaced with Howdens finished doors and they are lovely, really pleased with them. The only door unfinished was a fire door from our utility room to the garage and our joiner took that one home and did the treatment there for it.

Surely that’s the handles not the actual doors that are at fault

Try Deanta

If you're getting a handyman to fit them, just pay him extra to paint them?

We had these finished oak doors fitted and they are lovely. I did have to stain the edges that had been cut to fit accurately but the rest were finished. Our fitter advised on handles and locks (for bathroom and cloakroom), and also suggested having one half glazed door to the lounge to let in more light, which was helpful.

Yes but as OP is changing her doors because “the handles are going” it’s a fair warning.

We got ours from here, following MN recommendations. They’re gorgeous and we’re still delighted, two years on.
Passing forward the MN wisdom!

What's wrong with the doors you have? Why not just replace the handles?

Have you checked the guarantee to get them replaced?

We used Leader doors for fully finished.

Yep. The builder bought them as part of a major reno and we don’t have the receipts so they won’t change them for us. 🤷🏼‍♀️

@GoingRoundThatBlockAgain Ah that’s so annoying! 😤

LollyWillow · 02/04/2025 07:16

I've just had all of my internal doors replaced. I bought Deanta doors from Builders Depot and couldn't be happier with them.
I ended up getting unfinished as there wasn't a square doorway in the house, but they will only need 1 coat of oil so I'll do that as and when. There were also plenty of finished options.

None of them close because they have expanded over time and most of the handles don’t work properly and they’ve been painted multiple times (white) which now look grubby as we have 4 kids 🙈

It would be cheaper to have them sanded back so they close properly and new handles put on.

I have the same issue with crappy 20y old doors. I am replacing the handles and hinges myself and hammering back into place and repainting, worling really well - time consuming though!

Changing handles is quick and easy though, and relatively cheap.

They have ‘pre-finished’ doors, do you know what that means?
