Painter and decorator

Hi everyone need advice about the current situation we’re in, so basically we’ve had our 3 bed home fully renovated and we’ve currently hired a painter and decorator for the final touches, he quoted us 4,400 and we paid a 25% deposit he started on Wednesday and all he’s done is a first coat of paint, without any prep or anything which I did flag up because we have to much filling and sanding to do.

So he’s now saying he needs to change the deposit to 50% as it’ll make his life easier and he can get whatever he needs for us without asking us.. although we don’t mind going out to buy our own paints and stuff etc I’d rather get it myself.

He was the only painter who was available to start immediately which did seem like a bit of red flag but he had quite a few good reviews so I trusted him, I’m not sure what he’s trying to do as I think that’s too much money to hand without actually seeing much progress ..

I'd just get a new painter. You don't want to get any deeper into this and find you have to redo the whole thing.

@PersonallyIdBringAPicnicakaALittleSassy I don’t mind getting rid of him as I do know another paint and decorater but I’ve now paid him a 1k deposit for just 3 days worth of work if I tell him to stop now 😬

raisingstars · 28/03/2025 18:52

Will you have to redo any of the work he's done so far? Can you ask for the money back?

raisingstars · 28/03/2025 19:04

@PersonallyIdBringAPicnicakaALittleSassy
I don’t think so because all his done is a first coat of paint everywhere, he hasn’t done any of hard stuff yet like filling and sanding which is what I’d like to see first ideally…
we had a similar situation with our builders which we’ve just now got rid of because he kept taking stage payments and not actually doing the work, I’ve lost all hope in these tradies none of them seem genuine feel so helpless

Never trust in anyone who is available straight away!

raisingstars · 28/03/2025 19:08

@rosegoldwatcher

I know I did think that was a red flag tbh, do I just cancel him now and lose some money because I know he definitely won’t return some of it 🙁

Could you tell him that you just want him to, at this stage, prep properly and do the mist coat - for the £1k that you have already paid him?

raisingstars · 28/03/2025 19:34

@rosegoldwatcher

I did think about saying this but I know he probably won’t start the prep at all as he’s going to take the mick and say I’ve already done 1k worth of work or something

I know that it easy for me to say, but is it worth £1k to have to stand over him at every stage to make sure that he does everything properly?
If you do sack him make sure to leave a blistering review on Trust A Trader!

Wondering if we're thinking of the same person!

@rosegoldwatcher

tbh your right, I’m not 100% happy with their work anyway I can already see them trying to cut corners, I think we’re going to call it a day
