I need to replace our very knackered carpet and don't know where to go for something half decent as haven't bought carpet for years. Would like something good quality, probably wool-ish. Any suggestions?

Also, what do you do about your furniture, do you have to get someone in to move it, or do they do that for you?

We've just used Tapi, really helpful in store with helping us choose what we needed and the fitters were great too and really reasonable too. Took a week from ordering to fitting but we were told up to 3 weeks.

If you’re in London we used a fantastic and very cheap fitter and Tapi. And if you’re in Carlisle/ Borders I can recommend an independent fitter who gets good discounts!
But assuming you’re not near for my recommendations Tapi are very good.

I would advise woolish rather than wool after losing a carpet to moths/ beetley things !!

I got my carpet from Flooring Superstore and got a big discount as they price matched. I bought a Cormar wool carpet which is moth proof. I bought the underlay separately online. Flooring Superstore also have very good discounted off cuts which also saved me money.

I got an independent fitter and emptied all drawers and cupboards. The fitter worked around the furniture I couldn't remove.

I didn't know they could work round furniture, I want our bedroom doing but the thought of dismantling our super king ottoman is putting me off!!

Just explain to the fitter that some furniture can't be moved. I couldn't get the sofas or bookcase out as there was nowhere to put them.

We used Tapi and they were very quick and efficient. If you are going with wool make sure there is some synthetic in it to make it more hard wearing. Be prepared that the price per square foot you see in the shop is not the price you will end up paying as they add fitting, gripper rods, underlay etc.

Tapi re used our grippers, rods and stair dividers.

Ask for the most expensive underlay, for us having the stairs and landing done it was the difference of £40 to go for the best one, makes all the difference.

I recently carpeted two bedrooms, a hall and staircase with remnants bought from Designer Carpet. The smaller the remnant, the bigger the discount so if you don’t have huge rooms and are happy to play a bit of Tetris with the layout you can get really good quality carpet for far less than if you buy off the roll.

The service was great too.

Edited to add they also sell carpet by the metre. I’m happy with the Westex Ultimate Twist in various qualities, but they’ve not been down that long
