Large lounge could do with an update

1980s house so generous room size. Gets late afternoon light and used primarily in the evening. Big windows/patio doors.

Not sure what’s on the up decor wise?

Are you decorating/staging it to sell?

If not and you live there/planning to live there, isn't it better to choose colours and furnishings that you like rather than what the latest trend is?

lol @plantpottie not to sell and I’m not a blind trend follower but if I’m updating I’d like an update iyswim.

Just wondering what direction home trends are going in at the moment. Quite a few years ago we got a cheap interior designer in who gave us some ideas but they were VERY trend driven so we didn’t end up doing anything she suggested. What we were left with is perfectly nice curtains we bought to tide us over until we’d get something made to suit but that has turned into a decade where we had other priorities! We’ll probably move the curtains to a different room given they are plain/neutral.
