Underlay - what's worth it?

Getting new carpets and have two underlay options - a 10mm standard one, or an 11mm Cloud 9 one, which would be £170 more. No idea if it is worth it or not? Carpet will be a pretty standard polyprop one.

Buy the underlay on eBay, there will be cloud 9 for massively less. Or cloud 11 if you fancy it!

Actually for a basic carpet you are likely to be better off buying carpet on eBay too. Then just hire a fitter. I've done this several times. Saved masses.

A good underlay should last 25 years, so a few changes of carpet but keep the same underlay, so look at it as an investment if you can afford it.

Well… I have just this evening pulled up the last bit of carpet that was laid in 2011, in the entryway so high traffic.

The carpet looks absolutely shit and the gripper bar nails are rusty but the underlay actually looks pretty new – it’s Cosi 8mm, so not a luxe underlay at all.

It was the same when the stairs were redone – actually ended up leaving the old one down because it was fine and the new one was going to be a bit thick for the stairs.
