Drawers behind a cupboard door- are they annoying?

Designer has suggested doing this because we’ve asked for more drawers and it does look better however I’m worried they’ll be annoying.

Why would they be? You just have to close them properly.

D3cision5 · 03/02/2025 17:44

I guess because it’s an added step and also because I presuming the door has to be fully open to pull them out.

I've got this only with wire baskets on runners. It doesn't work at all well, it's all too easy to not quite open the door and scrape the drawer into it. My door is very scratched inside. Never again.

Omg that would annoy me so much. Drawers look just fine.

Short answer - Yes

Longer answer- Yes and I know this because I have drawers behind a door and it's bloody irritating

Talipesmum · 03/02/2025 18:05

That would definitely annoy me. Just get drawers that look nice.

Chasingsquirrels · 03/02/2025 18:07

I've got some wire drawers inside cabinets, albeit just 1 below the shelf with just shelf space above and below.

I'd say if you are just having drawers then yes, drawers behind a door would be annoying.

I also agree with others about scratching the inside of the doors.

Edit: was going to add a picture, but pictures have been removed.

Yeah I’ve got 6 on show in the new design but feel we need more as currently have 9 and I hate bending down. So they have 3 designed to go under hob (3 on another side)with a cupboard either side. Looks great but switching so you have a single cupboard under the hob and drawers either side doesn’t. So they suggested putting drawers behind one of the cupboard doors. It’s blowing my mind trying to work out the best configuration .🤯

I'd go for more drawers to balance.

Wire baskets behind a door are ok, better than shelves, but best for things you don't access to often - pet food, tupperware rather than cutlery for example. You can choose what level to install them as well.

whensmynexthol1day · 04/02/2025 16:38

You can put most things in drawers and they work better than cupboards - we have all our glasses, crockery, Tupperwares, cookware etc in drawers so I'd just swap out the cupboards for drawers all round (sorry if I've misunderstood the issue!)

Scentsitive · 04/02/2025 16:39

Yes that's what I'm going to do when we have our kitchen done.

Dilbertian · 04/02/2025 18:14

I vastly prefer things that work well over things that look good but don't work.

Drawers behind doors are a massive NO from me. I hate them with a passion.

Anyway, what's wrong with seeing drawers? Drawer front look just as good as cupboard doors.

ComingInByAnsible · 04/02/2025 18:37

OP, can you go for pullouts either side of the hob? Work similar to drawers but attached to what looks like doors. Best of both worlds? That's what we are doing.

Threewheeler1 · 04/02/2025 18:43

For me, yes.
They get on my tits!
It's like playing kitchen Jenga 😬
Normal drawers would do the job just fine and have more capacity.

My mum has got drawers inside drawers, and drawers behind cupboard doors, so that her kitchen just looks like two enormous panels. They're ALL annoying and I would never have them in my kitchen.

Another vote yes.
I know this is a kitchen thread but it's the same with IKEA PAX wardrobes - they have drawers behind doors.

HippyKayYay · 04/02/2025 18:51

I've got a larder cupboard with drawers (bottom half) behind two doors. I love it.

I've also got lots of drawers within pan drawers

And I hate them. I'm forever mis-timing in my morning hurry, and pulling at the drawers before the doors are fully open, or shutting the doors before the drawers are fully in.
