Help me choose some cushions!

I severely lack any interior decorating vision, I am very good at decorating things to match rather than complement...

We have just ordered a dark blue velvet sofa, and am now on the search for a few throw cushions for it! I'd like 4 - 6 cushions, with 2 nice big ones for head support on lazy days.

Our living room is fairly blandly decorated, it's a rental flat so I'm not concerned with it going with the rest of the room. Also in the area is a cream/greige/light blue distressed persian-esque rug.

Back to the cushions - I'm not overly set on a colour palette but would like to avoid yellows & oranges, I would like a variety of patterns/textures if possible, and really really want to avoid it being matchy matchy and more of an interior designed kind of vibe where it all gels but without looking like a Laura Ashley catalogue.

Please help me kind mumsnetters with an eye for decoration!

I would probably go for something like this combined with a couple of plainer cushions in a similar shade of purple:

Maybe this, and pick up the pinks and greens in some solid-coloured cushions? The light blue in the pattern would pick up the rug.

I'd opt for cushions in linen or textured weaves to contrast with the velvet of the sofa.

I'd have a mix of patterned and textured.

So maybe a black and white abstract print plus a navy and white wave or maybe an Orla Kiely sycamore leaf design. Add some fun with a frilly cushion in a different shape.

Then add texture with a woollen or a sheepskin cushion.

Or if you prefer a more subtle scheme keep the wool cushion but have a bolder B&W with a more delicate navy floral that co-ordinates with your rug and then have a round pompom cushion.

@MissyGirlie & @PixieandDelilahsmum I'm getting William Morris vibes which is something I've been considering but I think it comes back to feeling a bit too matchy.
