Panelling colours darker to lighter

Sorry that's not the best title. We've just bought a bungalow that had some panelling in the hall. It's the lower third of the walls all round. We were thinking of painting the panels all white and a contrast darker colour for the plain walls above, maybe Egyptian cotton. Is that the right way round ?

I think you can do it either way, I found some photos on Pinterest to decide how to do ours (easier to see how it will look)

We've done it the other way round so dark at the bottom, the theory being that the bottom is more likely to get bashed so hopefully won't mark

We did it white on the bottom and little Greene Slaked Lime deep at the top it looks nice in our dingy hallway
