^*Can anyone recommend a suitable window covering for this situation.
I currently have a net curtain and want rid of it!

I have a downstairs window on side of house which is onto the street. It's a hall window so you can see a fair bit of downstairs if you look through it. The reason I have a net curtain (my mother's suggestion!)
is we go away to in-laws regularly and I have a light on a time switch in the hall so it shines front, back and front door but without making any room too bright that someone could see in window that no-one was in.
I close the main curtains on the hall window when I'm away so no-one can see in when light is on and, because of the net curtain, from the street you can't tell the curtains are closed all day.

My neighbours across the road have vertical blinds on their side window but I can tell when they're away as the blinds are closed all the time and I'm trying to avoid this.

Any suggestions what else would work?*^

Window film? The kind where you can see out but they can't see in

You can get some lovely stained glass window film on Etsy.
